2 Of Karl Urbans Best Movies Desperately Need A Sequel And Its Unbelievable They Havent Happened Yet

1 week ago 6

Two of Karl Urban's best movies deserve to have a sequel, yet neither of them have been continued after eight years. Karl Urban has been acting for years, but his career has experienced unprecedented success recently. Urban has, of course, been part of major movies like The Lord of the Rings and The Bourne Supremacy, but his more recent work has put him directly in the spotlight. Films like Star Trek, Dredd, and Thor: Ragnarok, as well as shows like The Boys, have made him a genuine star. Urban's future also looks bright, as he's set to play Johnny Cage in the upcoming movie Mortal Kombat 2.

Even as he's gotten more popular, Urban has yet to be the main star in an ongoing franchise. The closest he's come is The Boys, but all the upcoming spinoffs of The Boys seem to be moving away from Billy Butcher to focus on other parts of the show's timeline and characters. Though some of Karl Urban's best movies and shows have come out in the last decade, there are two of his films that are long overdue for a sequel. Both Dredd and Star Trek were great Karl Urban movies, and either could have become his main franchises.

It’s A Shame Neither Dredd 2 Nor Star Trek 4 Has Happened Yet

Karl Urban Was Great In Dredd & Star Trek Beyond, Yet Never Got A Chance To Continue Their Stories

Both 2012's Dredd and the Kelvin timeline Star Trek trilogy were some of Karl Urban's best movies, yet they still haven't been continued. The last Star Trek movie Urban appeared in was 2016's Star Trek Beyond. While that film was a commercial failure - it made just $343 million at the box office compared to a budget of $185 million (via Box Office Mojo) - it was very well received by critics and audiences. Star Trek 4 has had extensive production problems ever since, though it is reportedly still in some form of development.

Both Dredd and Star Trek Beyond were great movies, and it's a shame that they didn't get sequels.

As for Judge Dredd, Dredd 2 never happened, largely because of the first film's poor box office performance. The film has, however, become a cult classic since it was released, and in 2022, Urban said he would play Judge Dredd again if given the chance. Both Dredd and Star Trek Beyond were great movies, and it's a shame that they didn't get sequels. Both of them could have easily become or continued long-running franchises, and they deserved a chance to tell even more stories set in their rich and well-developed worlds.

Karl Urban’s The Boys Popularity Should Make His Belated Sequels A No-Brainer

There has never been a better time for Karl Urban to revisit his beloved older movies. Urban is more popular now than he has ever been in the past. The Boys season 4 set streaming records for Amazon Prime Video, and Urban's portrayal of Billy Butcher is no small factor in the show's success. Mortal Kombat 2 also has the chance to make Urban's rise in popularity even more profound. Now that Karl Urban is a star, making sequels to Dredd and Star Trek Beyond seems like a surefire strategy for success.

Mortal Kombat 2: Why Karl Urban is Perfect For Johnny Cage

Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, and he was absolutely the perfect choice.

The main cast of Star Trek Beyond has, for the most part, enjoyed a similar level of popularity to Urban. For instance, Chris Pine starred in Wonder Woman, while Zoe Saldaña starred in all three Guardians of the Galaxy films. It may be difficult to get so many stars' schedules to align, but if Star Trek 4 manages it, now would be the perfect time to revisit the final frontier. Meanwhile, Dredd 2 has never been in a better place, as Urban is the only actor necessary for a legacy sequel. With any luck, Karl Urban can finally continue some of his best movies.

  • Based on the comic character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, Dredd is a sci-fi action movie that stars Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, a law enforcement officer who can commute sentences as quickly as he issues them. Set in a dystopian New York-like city called Mega-City One, Dredd is tasked with hunting down a drug lord who controls a massive 200-story apartment complex named Ma-Ma, pushing a new addictive drug called "Slo-Mo" that has become widely used in the slums.
