If you are ever on the hunt for great love songs to add to your playlist, look no further than the 1970s. That era, specifically, was a great decade for the romantic theme of music. It provided us with some of the most beloved tracks, like the Carpenters' "(They Long To Be) Close To You," Bee Gees’ "How Deep Is Your Love," Bread's "Make It with You," Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight," Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird," and the list goes on. Of course, there's one artist who contributed greatly to music history's string of love songs, even before and beyond the 1970s. That musician is Joni Mitchell, and one such love song considered a classic is “All I Want.”
For longtime fans, they already know Mitchell has several songs about the complexities of romance. But for casual listeners or even new fans, they are about to discover such a rich discography, filled with songs that make you want to fall in love (or not). Some of the best love songs from the multiple Grammy winner include "A Case of You," "My Old Man," "Help Me," "Chelsea Morning," "Coyote,” and "My Secret Place." But that list would be entirely incomplete without including “All I Want.” From her fourth studio album, Blue, the conversational song conveys desire for a deep romantic connection, mixed with uncertainty. While many believed Mitchell penned “All I Want” specifically about her relationship with fellow singer-songwriter James Taylor, the singer himself had denied that rumor. That doesn’t mean he did not wish the song were written about him, though.

Have you ever heard a song so good and romantic that you wished it were written about you? Well, Taylor certainly has. And the song came from Mitchell herself, with whom he had a romantic relationship in the 1970s. To be fair, Mitchell did write some beautiful words for “All I Want,” even though the song is also laced with uncertainty. The lyrics go, "I wanna wreck my stockings in some jukebox dive / Do you want, do you want, do you wanna dance with me, baby? / Do you wanna take a chance / On maybe finding some sweet romance with me, baby? Well, come on." There were plenty of lines in the song that could be associated with her relationship with Taylor, but the "Fire and Rain" singer — who described the song as “beautiful” — also explained that the song was already written even before they met. In a 2018 interview, Taylor said:
"I don’t think that song was written about me. Joni already had that song when we met. I did back her up on guitar when she recorded it. I thought it was a beautiful song… I wished it was about me!"

Mitchell has plenty of songs written about her past relationships. Blue, in particular, was conceived in the middle of her breakup with Graham Nash and her blossoming romance at the time with Taylor. The album itself was widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and was an addition to Mitchell’s already rich discography. It was billed as a confessional album, and “All I Want” couldn’t have proved that further. To this day, Blue is still celebrated as a great album and has found itself on “Best of” lists by various publications, decades after its initial release. And "All I Want" still stood out — a great feat for a non-single.

In fact, in the streaming era, many of her most-listened-to songs come from the 1971 folk-rock album, further cementing the claim that Blue wasn't just a critical darling — it was also beloved among listeners, even among a younger generation. Blue was also a commercially successful release for Mitchell, further solidifying her place in history as one of the highly respected figures in music.
