Rohan Naahar is a Weekend News Writer for Collider. From Francois Ozon to David Fincher, he'll watch anything once.
He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal of introducing audiences to a whole new world of cinema.
Some movies are retrospectively viewed as ahead of their time for being conceptually bold. Others are ahead of their time simply because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A movie that Mark Wahlberg starred in nearly two decades ago falls into the second category. In hindsight, it seems exactly like the kind of movie that would do tremendously well on streaming. In fact, Wahlberg has pivoted quite boldly to streaming in recent years, with a track record to justify the move. However, the movie in question was given a theatrical release during which it didn't exactly set the box office on fire. That it eventually turned out to be a home video favorite many years later should surprise nobody. It's now set to debut on a new platform, for an entirely new set of dads to enjoy.
The film in question was released in 2007; it earned mixed reviews and underperformed commercially. Produced on a reported budget of more than $60 million, it grossed around $95 million worldwide. It's now sitting at a 47% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "With an implausible story and numerous plot holes, Shooter fails to distinguish itself from other mindless action-thrillers." Such was the film's post-release success at home that it inspired a television spin-off. The show was headlined by Ryan Phillippe and ran for three seasons, from 2016 to 2018. This was roughly the same era when Prime Video series such as Bosch, Jack Ryan, and Goliath were targeting dads around the world. In a few years, the same demographic would be treated to Reacher, The Lincoln Lawyer, and a string of hits by Taylor Sheridan.
Here's Where You Can Watch the Mark Wahlberg Movie in March
In Shooter, Wahlberg plays a sniper framed for murder. It also starred Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Danny Glover, and others. Both in terms of box office and critical reception, Shooter fared worse than Tom Cruise's very similar Jack Reacher movie, which was released five years later in 2012. Wahlberg has since starred in a string of potboilers for various streaming platforms, with the most recent ones being Prime Video's Play Dirty and Apple TV's The Family Plan 2. Shooter was directed by Antoine Fuqua, who went on to direct the hit The Equalizer trilogy, and is now gearing up for the release of the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael.
You can watch Shooter on Starz for exactly one month, beginning March 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
