There has never been another character quite like Ned Stark
Image: HBOOne reason Game of Thrones enthralled viewers the moment it debuted on HBO in 2011 was that, as much as its large main cast was full of cutthroat bastards (both metaphorical and literal), every character had tremendous depth that made you understand who they were. This understanding came from what they did and said, and almost everyone in the sprawling cast has at least one poetic quote that defines their character.
Despite the fierce competition over eight seasons, no character has had a way with words like Eddard "Ned" Stark, played by the ever-warm and humble British actor Sean Bean through Game of Thrones' first nine episodes.
What is Ned Stark’s best quote in Game of Thrones?
Ned remains one of the most distinctive Game of Thrones characters. Though he appears in only one season and is less of a wordsmith than Littlefinger or Varys, his influence shapes the journeys and decisions of characters like Jon Snow and Arya Stark throughout the series.
Yet despite how much his words influence those around him, one quote from Ned's brief time on Game of Thrones defines the character perfectly.
In season 1, episode 7, “You Win or You Die,” Ned delivers his best line to Littlefinger.
“Do you have a shred of honor?”
While Ned has delivered plenty of other memorable lines throughout the first season — including House Stark’s iconic “Winter is coming” — this quote shows why Ned is arguably the most unique and memorable character in the show’s history.
How Ned Stark’s best quote remains relevant throughout Game of Thrones
Helen Sloan/HBOOne of Ned’s defining traits is that he is, above all, an honorable man.
When he learns that Jon Arryn — the previous Hand of the King and a father figure to him — was murdered to conceal the truth that Cersei’s children are illegitimate, fathered by her brother Jaime rather than her husband, Robert Baratheon, Ned decides to meet with Cersei. In this meeting, he warns her that he plans to tell Robert the truth and that, to avoid bloodshed, she should take her children and flee King’s Landing.
Game of Thrones fans also learned how far Ned’s honor would go in the 2026 theater production Mad King. To protect his sister Lyanna’s illegitimate son (Jon Snow) from Robert killing him after Robert's rebellion against Mad King Aerys, he lied, claiming the boy was his own despite having promised his betrothed, Catelyn Tully, that he would be faithful to her. This tarnished his reputation, but it also showed that Ned was willing to do anything to protect the people he loved most.
Ned also teaches his children this sense of honor, which is why Sansa Stark, for example, is more inclined to believe in honor and virtue in the earlier seasons of Game of Thrones. Honor also motivates Jon Snow to remain in the Night's Watch, even when Stannis Baratheon offers to legitimize him as a Stark.

It’s hard to disagree with that assessment. Ned is repeatedly warned that his honor may be what undoes him now that he is Robert’s Hand and in the political hotbed of King’s Landing. As we learn across the series, many players vie for the Iron Throne and, unlike Ned, are willing to use underhanded tactics and schemes to get it. That’s why it's no surprise that Ned, trusting Littlefinger to be as principled as he is, is betrayed by him and the City Watch when he tries to confront the council about Cersei’s illegitimate children.
Even when Ned is imprisoned and Varys begs him to abandon his plan and join the Night Watch, he refuses to betray his ideals—even at the cost of his life. Ned's death becomes the catalyst for seven more seasons of turmoil in Westeros.
Yet although honor causes many of Westeros’ most beloved and empathetic characters, like Ned, to die early, they meet their end with their moral code intact. Few, if any, of the characters who survive until Game of Thrones ends in season 8 can say the same.
