Characters are the essential foundation of a story that can make or break a series. Good characters can elevate a poorly written show, but bad characters can ruin a well-written series. This frequently happens in anime, but most of the time, it isn't enough to ruin a show. One Piece is one of the most popular anime and is known for its worldbuilding, expansive plot, and exciting characters. However, not all of them are beloved.
With an extensive roster of characters and plenty of goofy designs, One Piece is bound to have hateable characters, whether they are meant to be or not. While fans should focus on the good, sometimes a few bad apples ruin the bunch. This list will rank the most hated characters in One Piece based on fan opinion and aspects such as personality, design, how annoying they are, or what they have done. It will not include any manga information; it will be strictly anime.
15 Wapol
Image via Toei AnimationOne Piece has many arcs, and all of them feature a main villain that becomes a hated icon in the anime. Wapol is the antagonist of Drum Island, where the crew encountered Chopper. He hoarded or killed all the doctors on this island and made himself king, being a tyrannical ruler.
Wapol blew up onto the scene, becoming one of the most hated One Piece characters immediately. His design is ugly and arrogant, being a visually unattractive character that matches his atrocious personality. However, he is a bit lower since some fans like him and his storyline with Vivi, proving that One Piece is a phenomenal story that doesn't abandon its characters.
14 Squard
Image via Toei AnimationAlmost all the characters on this list are well-known villains, but some lesser-known villains make a bad impression fast. Squard was a member of the Whitebeard Pirates, but betrayed his captain after Akainu corrupted him.
Squard is a complex character despite only having a minor part. However, many fans didn’t see him as a tragic character but rather as someone who betrayed trust and tried to kill one of the most beloved One Piece characters, making Squard undeservedly hated.
13 Hordy Jones
Image via Toei AnimationThe Fishman Island arc is one of the most polarizing in One Piece, mainly because of its pacing and inconsistency. However, the villain didn’t sit well with fans either. Hordy Jones is a fishman who tries to revive the Fishman pirates by taking over the kingdom and killing the princess to start a revolution.
Despite his flaws, Hordy Jones is a complex and well-written villain who embodies the arc's themes incredibly. However, he has committed many despicable acts and is a generally unlikable character, which many fans absolutely hated. From killing the queen using underhanded methods to his petty beliefs, Hordy Jones is rotten to the core.
12 Kurozumi Kanjuro
Image via Toei AnimationWano is the longest arc in One Piece, and so it naturally had a lot of characters and villains, some of which are more hated than others. Kanjuro was a member of the Nine Red Scabbards before he betrayed his lord and revealed himself to be an ally of Orochi and Kaido.
One thing viewers can take away from this list is that fans don’t take kindly to traitors, as Kanjuro's betrayal was one of the most iconic. After risking their lives to protect him, Kanjuro repaid no kindness, revealing himself as part of the Kurozumi clan. However, it was an unexpected plot twist that proved One Piece is an excellent animated show worth watching.
11 Vander Decken IX
Image via Toei AnimationAs previously mentioned, a lot of fans don’t like Fishman Island, but the worst character in it is by far Vander Decken IX. Son of a famous pirate, he has his sights set on marrying the princess of Fishman Island, Shirahoshi, leading him to drastic measures.
Vander Decken is just an unsavory character with no redeeming traits, other than his potential to be the strongest One Piece character. His disturbing crush on Shirahoshi is one thing, but his obsession and gross design further the hate for this completely irredeemable character.
10 York
Image via Toei AnimationKicking off this list is one of the most recent characters in the anime, York, a satellite of Vegapunk made so he can get more work done. Her aspect represents Greed, meaning she sleeps, eats, and goes to the bathroom instead of the other Vegapunks, so they can be more efficient. Fans initially thought she was an airhead, but the show revealed her as the traitor who captured Vegapunk and sold him out to the World Government.
The Egghead Saga is already one of the best in One Piece, with this major twist adding to its intensity. However, it doesn't do any favors for York's likability. She ranks this low just because she is a new character, and the hate hasn't fully set in; fans are also unsure if the show will redeem her. Despite this, they have no positive feelings towards her, despising her for the betrayal and death of Shaka.
9 Foxy
Image via Toei AnimationLong Ring Long Land is one of the most underrated arcs in anime, with, unfortunately, many haters. It also introduced Foxy, who challenged the Straw Hat Pirates to a Davy Back Fight to poach one of their crewmates. He is a goofy and unserious villain, played more for comedic relief, but surprisingly put up a good fight against Luffy with his cheap tricks and slow-slow devil fruit.
It pains me to put him on this list, but Foxy is one of the most polarizing characters, and the consensus leans toward hate. While some fans (like myself) like him, most find him annoying, from his personality, ugly design, and tedious devil fruit. To many, he also represents the Long Ring Long Land arc, which is the fans' least favorite One Piece arc. He is a weak villain, and the fans have branded him as a hateable and forgettable villain.
8 Stelly
Image via Toei AnimationSome fans may be confused about who this is, which isn't uncommon, as Sterry is a minor character with only a few appearances. However, even with little screen time, he established himself as a despicable and annoying brat, making life worse for some fan-favorite characters. Sterry is a noble and adoptive brother to Sabo, with whom he had a rocky relationship.
While most of this list features some of the best villains in One Piece, Sterry is an insignificant piece of work. He was constantly rude and violent towards Sabo as a child, making this spoiled child a quick and easy target for fan hate. He never changed either, even being an ignorant and arrogant king when he appeared during the Reverie. The less the viewers see of him, the better.
7 Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)
Image via Toei AnimationWano marked a shift in the hierarchy of power in the world with the deaths of Kaido and Big Mom, some of the strongest Emperors in One Piece. Marshall D. Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard, is a super rookie who rose through the ranks to become an Emperor through cunning tactics. He is one of the series' main villains and a character foil to Luffy, meaning he will play a much more significant role in the future.
Blackbeard is an interesting character for this list, mainly because the show makes fans hate him, but they understand that it is his purpose. Some appreciate the quality of his writing, but overall, fans hate him with a burning passion for everything he's done. While he might be strong and opportunistic, this resulted in the capture of Ace, a fan-favorite, and the death of Whitebeard, one of the most respected characters. He's evil with no redeeming or sympathetic traits and is very loathsome, which is what makes him a perfect villain.
6 Charlotte Flampe
Image via Toei AnimationSometimes, a minor character is more than enough to get fans' blood boiling, and that is precisely what Charlotte Flampe did. She is one of the many daughters of Big Mom, and the family makes up one of the strongest pirate crews in One Piece. Flampe is the Minister of Honey and the president of the Katakuri fan club, but after seeing her brother's deformed face, she berates him mid-fight.
Her annoying and rude personality immediately rubbed fans the wrong way, but she took it a step too far after intervening in Katakuri and Luffy's fight. This even annoyed her brother, causing him to tell her off. However, when fans thought they couldn't hate her more, she insulted her own brother for his deformity and previously gushed over him. This breach of loyalty and respect instantly cemented her as one of the most hated One Piece characters.
