Chris is a Senior News Writer for Collider. He can be found in an IMAX screen, with his eyes watering and his ears bleeding for his own pleasure. He joined the news team in 2022 and accidentally fell upwards into a senior position despite his best efforts.

For reasons unknown, he enjoys analyzing box office receipts, giant sharks, and has become known as the go-to man for all things BoschMission: Impossible and Christopher Nolan in Collider's news division. Recently, he found himself yeehawing along to the Dutton saga on the Yellowstone Ranch.

He is proficient in sarcasm, wit, Photoshop and working unfeasibly long hours. Amongst his passions sit the likes of the history of the Walt Disney Company, the construction of theme parks, steam trains and binge-watching Gilmore Girls with a coffee that is just hot enough to scald him.

His obsession with the Apple TV+ series Silo is the subject of mockery within the Senior News channel, where his feelings about Taylor Sheridan's work are enough to make his fellow writers roll their eyes.

Lawless is one of those movies that never really became as big as it should have, even though it had all the ingredients. It has a stacked cast, a grimy outlaw setting, and one of Tom Hardy’s most memorable performances from the early 2010s. It is not a traditional Western, but it absolutely has the same rough, hard-living spirit. Now it is getting a fresh streaming push, with Tubi adding it on April 1.

Directed by John Hillcoat, the film tells the story of the Bondurant brothers, bootleggers operating in Prohibition-era Virginia who find themselves facing pressure from law enforcement and violent rivals. It is heavy, intense, and more character-driven than some people may remember, which is a big part of why it has aged pretty well. The cast includes Hardy as Forrest Bondurant, Shia LaBeouf as Jack Bondurant, Jason Clarke as Howard Bondurant, Jessica Chastain as Maggie Beauford, Guy Pearce as Charlie Rakes, Mia Wasikowska as Bertha Minnix, and Gary Oldman as Floyd Banner.

Is 'Lawless' Worth Watching?

Collider’s review stated that Lawless is a film caught between two ideas — a thoughtful exploration of violence and survival, and a more crowded crime drama that never quite balances all of its moving parts. Lawless works because of the contrast between Forrest and Jack. Jack is drawn to the image of being a gangster — the clothes, the reputation, the lifestyle — but hesitates when it comes to real violence. Forrest, on the other hand, avoids the spotlight but understands that brutality is sometimes necessary to survive.

"I believe John Hillcoat has a great movie in him (some would argue he already delivered it with The Proposition; I like that movie but it didn't leave a lasting impression), but he hasn't quite reached it yet. There are glimmers of greatness in Lawless—the performances, the setting, the cinematography—but the theme hints at a leaner story, and what's meant to serve as embellishment comes off as a distraction. Lawless is willing to go the distance, but it overshoots its target."

Lawless will arrive on Tubi April 1.
