Surviving the apocalypse is already a tall order, but Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl makes it considerably worse by turning survival into entertainment. Carl and Princess Donut have to contend with monsters, death traps, and an audience watching their every move as they descend through the World Dungeon. Somewhere in all that carnage, a man in his underwear and a talking cat have become a fantasy duo worth following into just about any terrible situation.

Part of the appeal is watching Carl figure out how to survive a system designed to kill him. Every victory comes with the possibility that the next floor will introduce something even more ridiculous, and knowing the rules is only useful until someone finds a way to exploit them. For readers who have wondered how they would fare inside the dungeon themselves, an especially miserable commute is on the horizon.

Renegade Game Studios has listed Dungeon Crawler Carl Unstoppable: Iron Tangle Expansion for a November 2026 release, with preorders available for $25. The expansion continues the core game’s campaign on Floor 4, sending players into a sprawling network of interconnected subway tunnels. New allies, tactics, and upgrades will help with the journey, although five new bosses are waiting to make sure nobody gets too comfortable. The Nightmare Express is part of that adventure, with players searching for stairs or alternate escape routes while trying to avoid getting stuck in the Abyss. The box adds 16 Floor 4 threats, 24 core cards, and 14 upgrade cards, alongside maps and a train token. Players will need the Dungeon Crawler Carl Unstoppable core game to use the expansion.

What Is ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl Unstoppable’?

Designed by John D. Clair, Dungeon Crawler Carl Unstoppable lets players take on the dungeon as Carl or Princess Donut, either solo or in a two-player cooperative game. Its core box covers the first three floors, with each play session focused on a single floor. Renegade also lists that $60 base game for November, giving fans the option to pick up the opening adventure and its continuation during the same release month. The game uses sleeves with interchangeable card components, allowing players to change their cards as they progress.

There is a catch, naturally: improving your abilities also increases the threats you face, while only some benefits purchased with experience carry into the next floor. That sounds appropriately cruel for a Dungeon Crawler Carl adaptation, where getting stronger hardly means getting a break. Putting those decisions in players’ hands is an appealing way to bring Dinniman’s world to the table. Reading about a disastrous encounter is one thing; realizing your own choices helped create the disaster should make the dungeon’s cruelty considerably more personal.
