Chris is a Senior News Writer for Collider. He can be found in an IMAX screen, with his eyes watering and his ears bleeding for his own pleasure. He joined the news team in 2022 and accidentally fell upwards into a senior position despite his best efforts.

For reasons unknown, he enjoys analyzing box office receipts, giant sharks, and has become known as the go-to man for all things BoschMission: Impossible and Christopher Nolan in Collider's news division. Recently, he found himself yeehawing along to the Dutton saga on the Yellowstone Ranch.

He is proficient in sarcasm, wit, Photoshop and working unfeasibly long hours. Amongst his passions sit the likes of the history of the Walt Disney Company, the construction of theme parks, steam trains and binge-watching Gilmore Girls with a coffee that is just hot enough to scald him.

His obsession with the Apple TV+ series Silo is the subject of mockery within the Senior News channel, where his feelings about Taylor Sheridan's work are enough to make his fellow writers roll their eyes.

It’s been 11 years since stepdad vs. biological dad became a full-contact sport on the big screen — and now you can relive the chaos without spending a cent. The 2015 comedy Daddy’s Home will soon become available to stream for free, giving audiences another chance to revisit one of the most unexpectedly successful family comedies of the 2010s.

Directed by Sean Anders, the film centers on Brad Whitaker, a mild-mannered radio executive whose life is thrown into turmoil when the ultra-confident biological father of his stepchildren suddenly re-enters the picture. Cue the dad-off. The cast includes Will Ferrell as Brad, Mark Wahlberg as Dusty, Linda Cardellini, Thomas Haden Church, John Cena and Hannibal Buress.

The movie's synopsis is as follows: "Brad Whitaker (Ferrell) is a kindhearted radio executive who wants to be the best possible stepfather to his wife's (Cardellini) two children. When her freewheeling ex-husband, Dusty (Wahlberg), breezes back into town, Brad's feeling of insecurity quickly develops into an inferiority complex. As Dusty demonstrates his flair for athletics, home repair and bad-boy charisma, Whitaker finds himself in a no-holds-barred battle to one-up his rival and win the approval of his family."

How Bad Is 'Daddy's Home'?

Daddy's Home Cast sit together looking forward, concerned

Well, it's not great, we can't lie. It holds a grim 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 50% rating from audiences. At the box office, it earned $241 million globally. Collider's review of the movie gave it a bit of a kicking, too:

"If you’ve seen enough movies, you know how this is going to go down. Ferrell has to embarrass himself until he finds redemption, Wahlberg has to look super cool until he fails, and supporting actors like Thomas Haden Church and Hannibal Buress get to show up and kill for ten minutes to pad this out to a reasonable running time. When writer/director Sean Anders started his big screen career with Sex Drive it seemed like he could take high-concept set-ups and deliver relatable comedy in them, but of late, he’s just been doing dumb for dumb’s sake. With Daddy’s Home he finally hit a home run as the film made $150 million domestic, so hopefully he’ll use his success to do something more interesting."

Daddy's Home will begin streaming on Kanopy next month.
