The movie was not the obvious choice for a sequel, with the ending of Fall introducing a horrifying twist and putting one character through an ordeal that likely left her afraid to climb so much as a staircase. However, one character from Fall has left a legacy, with Shiloh's sister and her friend planning a tribute that leaves the two in the same situation as the original movie, but worse. Fall 2: Deadpoint sees the two friends and their guide traversing a treacherous plank walk around a mountain in Thailand, before a rockslide leaves them stranded 3000 feet above ground.
Fall's Surprise Netflix Success Led Directly To Fall 2: Deadpoint
Fall works as a standalone movie, but the survival thriller surged on Netflix charts when it was made available for streaming, thanks to its unusual premise, standout acting from the main actors and cameo from Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and the twist that makes a rewatch essential. With a comparatively small budget of $3 million, Fall made around seven times this, earning $21.8 million at the box office and uniting critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with both giving the movie a 79% positive rating.
This success led directly to a sequel to Fall being announced in early 2023, while producer James Harris told Deadline, "we don’t want to make something that feels like a copycat or less than the first one.” As part of the team responsible for the 47 Meters Down shark movies, it was always possible that a Fall sequel, like the 47 Meters Down sequel, Uncaged, could have shared nothing more than a premise, with viewers able to start with either movie. That said, Fall 2: Deadpoint is a chronological sequel, though the timeline has not yet been revealed.
Later in 2023, there was another exciting update, with the news that Fall had the greenlight for two sequels. At the time of the announcement, the plots for both were still under wraps, but with Fall 2: Deadpoint following Shiloh's sister, Jax, it is certain that the third Fall movie will be connected to the first two, though which climber will end up in trouble next remains to be seen. It has been confirmed that Fall 3 will feature returning characters from the first two movies while introducing new supporting cast members.
Fall's Success Didn't Come Without Controversy
Many of the scariest movies have surprisingly low age certificates, while some PG-13 horror movies would have benefited from an R-rating. Fall found the reverse problem. While there is relatively little violence and gore, the movie initially received an R-rating for its language, notably over 30 F-bombs, no matter how realistic for two terrified people up a tower without a ladder. With the creators wanting to reach a wider age bracket, Fall was edited using controversial deepfake technology to alter the actors' mouth movements to change the word to "freaking," while a few other sentences were similarly altered in post-production.
Fall 2: Deadpoint hits theaters on September 2, 2026.
As might be expected, the practice was extremely controversial, with some praising the creators' resourceful approach to an issue that would have a significant effect on the movie's certificate. On the other hand, it sparked a debate about the ethics of retroactive censorship and the disturbing nature of deepfakes. Fall 2: Deadpoint has a PG-13 certificate, and while we can be almost certain that the need for this type of editing was avoided with softer language when filming, this does not mean the movie will not be as hard-hitting or terror-inducing as the original. It may even be more so.
