The Avengers are Marvel's pre-eminent superheroes - the protectors of Earth, the galaxy and the entirety of reality. In the last twenty-six years, they've recruited some of their most powerful members of all time - here are the top ten.
10 Thor, aka Jane Foster
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Revamped by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera, Joined in 2015's All-New All-Different Avengers #1
After Thor Odinson became unworthy of Mjolnir, the weapon and its powers passed to Jane Foster. As the new Thor, Jane possessed godlike strength and total control over the weather.
Jane's unique relationship with Mjolnir allowed her to use it as the original Thor never could, lending the hammer increased fluidity of movement and increased independent sentience.
After standing down as Thor, Jane Foster became the new Valkyrie, swapping Mjolnir for the shape-shifting weapon Undrjarn the All-Weapon. She's played in the MCU by Natalie Portman, where she's taken up Mjolnir but hasn't actually joined Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
9 Ghost Rider, aka Robbie Reyes, aka the All-Rider
Created by Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore, Joined in 2018's Avengers Volume 8 #6
Robbie Reyes has always been a unique Ghost Rider, but it was only alongside the Avengers that he realized his full potential as the All-Rider.
While regular Riders can imbue their mount - motorbike, muscle car or mammoth - with Hellfire, Robbie can empower essentially endless objects with eldritch power, from dead Celestials to sentient planets.
8 Starbrand, aka Brandy Selby
Created by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness, Joined in 2022's Avengers Volume 8 #55
For as long as Earth has existed, it's had a Starbrand - an individual empowered with unimaginable cosmic might. The Starbrand can unleash cosmic-level energy blasts, is capable of interstellar flight and has cosmic awareness that connects her to the entire multiverse.
Sadly for Brandy, using her powers caused her to age at an accelerated rate. She started out as a godlike baby cared for by the Avengers, was trained as a teen by an alt-reality Rocket Racoon, and eventually sacrificed herself to save the entire multiverse alongside the Avengers.
7 Storm, aka Ororo Munroe
Created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, Joined in 2011's Avengers Volume 4 #19
One of the most powerful mutants in the world, Storm has served on the Avengers twice over the last few decades. An Omega-level mutant, Storm has godlike control over all elements of the weather - lightning, air pressure, temperature and even electromagnetism.
Storm has become so powerful that the second time she joined the Avengers, it was at Thor's behest, since he wanted the team to have a Storm God on their side while he took a sabbatical.
6 Hyperion, aka Marcus Milton
Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Adapted by Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opeña, Joined in 2012's Avengers Volume 5 #1
Starting out as Marvel's parodic version of Superman, Hyperion was rebooted in 2012 as the last survivor of a fallen universe. Thor's equal in power, Hyperion became the blood brother of the Thunder God, and the two joined together to try and prevent the Beyonders' destruction of the multiverse.
Multiple versions of Hyperion exist in the Marvel multiverse, and several of them have visited Earth-616, but the truck-driving Avenger is the most heroic.
5 Ares, God of War
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Joined in 2007's Mighty Avengers #1
A former villain, Ares was recruited to the Avengers following the events of Civil War, when Tony Stark was seeking a combined Thor/Wolverine. The God of War, Ares has the physiology of a god - immense strength, an indestructible body, and the ability to resist diverse powers such as magic, telepathy and time travel.
Ares also have instinctive mastery of all forms of weapon, and can control anything engulfed in war, from individual soldiers to entire nations.
4 Camelot, aka the Impossible City
Created by Jed MacKay and Carlos Villa, Joined in 2023's Avengers Volume 9 #6
The Impossible City is a sentient spacecraft created by the heroic Twilight Court. Thanks to a timeloop, the Court were inspired to build Camelot by the Avengers... but only after the ship had actually served with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The Impossible City is strong enough "to push a planet out of orbit" with incredibly potent weaponry and the ability to travel between dimensions.
The Impossible City operated as the Avengers' base for a short time, gaining the ability to manifest plastic bodies within its own city-sized form. It now surfs the multiverse righting wrongs with the Court.
3 Captain Universe and Captain Beyond | aka Tamara Devoux and Elijah Jackson
Created by Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opeña, Joined in Avengers Volume 5 #1 | Dan Slott and Bill Wiley, Joined in 2025's Astonishing Avengers Infinity Comic #30
Tamara Devoux and Elijah Jackson have both acted as hosts for the Enigma Force - the sentience of the universe, which chooses hosts to become the new Captain Universe. Hosts can manipulate matter and energy on a cosmic level, manifesting abilities analogous to a god.
When reality was fractured and the Avengers were down, former Captain Universe Elijah manifested a new identity as Captain Beyond, seemingly able to access those same powers in a new way.
2 Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo, aka Stephen Strange and Jericho Drumm
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Joined in 2007's New Avengers #27 | Stan Lee, Len Wein and John Romita Sr., Joined in 2014's Avengers & X-Men: AXIS #9
Two of Marvel's most powerful sorcerers, Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo (formerly Brother Voodoo) have access to immense magical abilities, allowing teleportation, healing and energy manipulation.
Both have held the position of Sorcerer Supreme at different times, becoming the most powerful magic-users in reality. After years as a solo act, Strange finally signed up with the Avengers following Civil War, when the rebel heroes needed a patron and somewhere to hide. Voodoo joined later as part of the Avengers Unity Division, and is one of the few people to have defeated the Juggernaut.
1 The Sentry, aka Robert 'Bob' Reynolds
Created by Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee, Rick Veitch, Joined in 2005's New Avengers #10
Marvel's most powerful hero, the Sentry possesses three sets of superpowers. As Robert Reynolds, the hero can control reality on a molecular level. Subconsciously expressing his desire to be a hero, Bob created the alternate persona of the Sentry - a Superman-esque hero with Hulk-tier strength and invulnerability.
At his strongest, the Sentry can literally tear holes in reality, heal from any injury (including death), and fly faster than light.
Sadly, Bob's subconscious self-hatred and doubt also created the Void - the Sentry's dark opposite, who can wield darkness as a weapon, resurrect the dead, control the weather, and is so strong it broke every bone in the Hulk's body.
Those are the 10 strongest heroes who joined the Avengers since 2000 - let us know below what you think of our ranking, and what other heroes belong on this list.
