While sitcoms are generally judged on their humor, they can also deliver some devastating emotional moments, especially when on-screen couples break up. Many sitcoms focus on romance as a way to provide some gentle, relatable drama, and as an avenue for humor. However, sitcoms which balance humor with heart can end up creating some surprisingly poignant moments as their love stories take twists and turns.

While some sitcom couples are bad ideas from the beginning, there are others which get the audience rooting for them. If a couple has great on-screen chemistry and they complement one another well, it can be heartbreaking to see their relationships fall apart. Some of the most memorable sitcom moments include dramatic breakups, so fans can remember these heartbreaks for years.

15 Schitt's Creek Moments That Made Fans Cry

Schitt’s Creek ran for six hilarious seasons, but the show also provided some deeply emotional moments capable of bringing fans to tears.

Alexis and Ted's relationship in Schitt's Creek does a lot to humanize her. She starts off as entitled and out-of-touch with most people, but she gradually starts to connect with people. Twyla is her first friend in town, but Ted is the one who makes her consider her future. Eventually, they break up amicably to pursue their career goals in different parts of the world. It's a heartbreaking ending for the couple, but there's still the silver lining that they have grown as people, and they are reaching for their dreams.

9 Phoebe & David

Friends

Release Date September 22, 1994

Seasons 10

Most of the romantic drama in Friends focuses on the on-again-off-again relationship between Ross and Rachel, although Monica and Chandler's relationship also takes up a lot of time. Phoebe is often left out, which makes the few relationships she does have even more special. Before the show couples her up with Mike to give her a happy ending, the most meaningful relationship she has is with David.

Phoebe's breakup with David showed that her character was underutilized in the show's drama.

David first meets Phoebe when he talks during her performance at the coffee shop. His lovably awkward style makes him a good match for her, since he doesn't like to play games, and he's a romantic and attentive partner. Sadly, David had to move to Minsk for his work as a scientist, and the distance was too much for the couple. Phoebe's best moments in Friends are mostly bizarre interjections, but her breakup with David showed that her character was underutilized in the show's drama.

8 Roy & Keeley

Ted Lasso

Release Date August 14, 2020

Seasons 3

After breaking up with Jamie at his most immature and insecure, Keeley gets together with Roy, who seems like a much better fit for her. He doesn't have Jamie's ego, so he can treat Keeley with respect and love. She also turns out to be the best thing for him, since she brings some optimism and joy into his life. It's a big shock when Roy and Keeley break up at the beginning of Ted Lasso season 3, especially since their reasons remain shrouded in mystery for a while.

Even when Roy finally reads his apology letter to Keeley, the explanation is extremely unsatisfying.

At first, everyone at AFC Richmond responds with just as much shock as the audience to the news of Roy and Keeley's breakup. They ask Roy for details, but he's suspiciously evasive. Even when he finally reads his apology letter to Keeley, the explanation is extremely unsatisfying. After her brief but tumultuous relationship with Jack, Keeley ends season 3 once again torn between Roy and Jamie. With constant speculation about Ted Lasso season 4, it's possible that Roy and Keeley's love story isn't over yet.

7 BoJack & Wanda

BoJack Horseman

Release Date August 22, 2014

Seasons 6

In season 2 of BoJack Horseman, BoJack starts a relationship with Wanda. Since Wanda has recently woken up from a decades-long coma, she still has the mind of a much younger woman, and she also has no cultural frame of reference for anything later than the 1980s. Both of these things draw BoJack to her, since she doesn't know about the show that made him famous in the 1990s.

Wanda is a middle-aged woman with the mind of a 20-year-old, but even she manages to mature and change her ways quicker than BoJack does.

BoJack and Wanda eventually split up when she grows tired of his world-weary, defeatist attitude, and he pushes her away in an act of petty self-preservation. Wanda is a middle-aged woman with the mind of a 20-year-old, but even she manages to mature and change her ways quicker than BoJack does. He remains stuck in the past in his own peculiar way. By allowing his relationship with Wanda to crumble, it reinforced the fact that he was rejecting the possibility of growth and self-reflection that went beyond simplistic self-loathing.

6 Fleabag & The Priest

Fleabag

Release Date June 21, 2016

Seasons 2

Season 2 of Fleabag is all about the protagonist's flirtatious relationship with the man she dubs as "the Hot Priest". There's a lot of religious symbolism to the fact that she is reaching out to the Priest as a means of finally absolving her soul and forgiving herself for the death of her best friend. She finds a lot of meaning in her relationship with him, but she knows that he is unlikely to turn his back on his religion.

Fleabag finds a lot of meaning in her relationship with him, but she knows that he is unlikely to turn his back on his religion.

The series finale of Fleabag ends with the unsurprising but no less devastating development that the Priest reaffirms his commitment to the church, rather than pursuing a relationship with Fleabag. It's a bittersweet ending, since it comes laced with the positive that Fleabag has finally allowed herself to live in the present moment without creating layers of separation from the truth. Still, it's sad to see two people who suit each other so well choosing to part ways.

5 Ted & Victoria

How I Met Your Mother

Release Date September 19, 2005

Seasons 9

How I Met Your Mother has a unique premise that makes it clear that all Ted's relationships in the show are doomed to fail in some way. Mostly, each relationship provides a few laughs and teaches Ted something while the story slowly builds to the moment that he meets Tracy. Ted's relationship with Victoria is a little different, however, as it seems to offer him a real chance at lasting happiness.

4 Schmidt & Elizabeth

New Girl

Release Date September 20, 2011

Seasons 7

One of the running jokes in New Girl is about how much Schmidt has changed since his college days. Schmidt goes from an overweight, fun-loving kid to a man obsessed with his appearance and his status. Elizabeth represents an opportunity for him to reconnect with the carefree side of himself from his youth, and he has a lot of fun hanging out with her. Still, he can't let go of his feelings for Cece.

It would have been nice to see him figure things out with Elizabeth, since she allows him to have fun and abandon his insecurities.

Schmidt makes the horrible decision to try and date both Elizabeth and Cece at the same time, without either woman knowing about the other. This leads to one of New Girl's best episodes, as he accidentally invites them both to his workplace party. His inability to commit to either woman represents his conflicted personality, but it would have been nice to see him figure things out with Elizabeth, since she allows him to have fun and abandon his insecurities. Their breakup makes it hard to see Schmidt as a good guy.

3 Dwight & Angela

The Office

Dwight and Angela perfectly match each other's energy, making them one of the weirdest sitcom couples ever. Neither one of them seems to have much of a basis in reality, but this just makes their peculiar love story all the more endearing, since they are the only people who understand one another. The Office's series finale focuses on their wedding, but the couple had a long and winding road to get there. Their breakup in season 4 is still strangely tragic.

Although Dwight and Angela often seem too bizarre to be relatable, their breakup in "Dunder Mifflin Infinity" is surprisingly emotional.

Although Dwight and Angela often seem too bizarre to be relatable, their breakup in "Dunder Mifflin Infinity" is surprisingly emotional. Their responses highlight their human sides. This is especially effective in Dwight's case. After he is dumped by Angela, he is forced to go on a drive with Michael to win back their old clients, and he uses this as an opportunity to vent his frustrations. In his own way, Dwight lays his heart out.

Throughout Sex and the City, Carrie is unable to move past her feelings for Big. The other major contender for her affections is Aidan, who provides her with everything that Big denies her. Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha had countless memorable moments on Sex and the City, but a handful defined Darren Star’s HBO series.

Carrie and Aidan's breakup on the day of Charlotte's wedding is heartbreaking, partly because it's so self-inflicted, but also because Aidan deserves much better. After complaining about Big's treatment of her, Carrie finds herself in the position of breaking someone's heart because of her fear of commitment. The couple later get back together, but their second breakup is just as devastating, as Carrie's issues come back to haunt her once more.

1 Doc & Beans

Mythic Quest

Cast Rob McElhenney , Ashley Burch , Jessie Ennis , Imani Hakim , David Hornsby , Charlotte Nicdao , Danny Pudi , F. Murray Abraham , Naomi Ekperigin

Release Date February 7, 2020

Seasons 3

"A Dark Quiet Death" is one of the best episodes of Mythic Quest, even though it has almost nothing to do with the rest of the show. This standalone episode would be a great introduction for Mythic Quest newcomers, as it displays the show's brilliant mix of humor and incisive writing. Jake Johnson and Cristin Milioti play a couple who go into business together as game designers, but they drift further apart as their dream is twisted by corporate influences.

The episode's title comes from the name of their video game, but it also describes their relationship.

"A Dark Quiet Death" is a sensational miniature love story. Beans wants to preserve the purity of her artistic vision, while Doc is open to a few changes if it makes him more money. This reflects their ethos of love and life, with Beans being an ideologue and Doc being the more pragmatic of the two. Their relationship doesn't explode all at once. Instead, it suffers through a series of almost imperceptible changes until it's unrecognizable. The episode's title comes from the name of their video game, but it also describes their relationship.
