Dealing with social anxiety is a daily struggle for countless people, and watching a character go through those same struggles in an anime can remind viewers that they aren't alone.
Of course, social anxiety looks different for everyone. For some, it comes from a fear of being judged, while for others, it feels like a heavy mental block that's hard to shake.
Watching a character face and eventually overcome these similar struggles is often a great way to cope. Fortunately, modern anime are incredibly good at capturing what all those different kinds of anxiety actually look and feel like.
10 Jujutsu Kaisen 0
In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Yuta’s anxiety comes from his fear of harming those around him if he gets too close to them. After a tragic accident turned his childhood friend Rika into a cursed spirit, Yuta isolated himself to keep those around him safe. This caused him to lose his self-esteem, making him believe that he doesn't even deserve to live.

20 Strongest Jujutsu Kaisen Characters of All Time, Ranked
While not everyone in Jujutsu Kaisen cursed energy, the strongest characters have dangerous techniques and high levels of cursed energy.
But Yuta’s life starts to get better when he enrolls in Jujutsu High and meets Maki, Inumaki, and Panda. One of the most heartbreaking Jujutsu Kaisen quotes from Yuta, "I want to have the confidence to say it's okay for me to live," shows how heavy his guilt is. He learns that instead of hiding away due to his anxiety, he should use his powers to protect the people he loves.
9 My Dress Up Darling
In My Dress Up Darling, Wakana Gojo’s isolation stems from his fear of being judged by those around him due to his "uncool" hobby of making traditional Hina dolls. He believed that no matter how hard he tried, he would not be able to blend in with those around him due to his hobby.
All of this changes when Marin Kitagawa finds out about his hobby and appreciates his skills.
Not too long ago, people were harshly judged for their love for anime and cosplay. Because of this, anime fans hid their interests, just like Gojo did with his dolls. Seeing Gojo not care about what others think of him and just do what he loves is something that everyone should be able to identify with.
8 Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu
Starting a new school without your friends is a scary experience that almost everyone can relate to. That’s the exact nightmare Hitori Bocchi is facing, who has only ever had one friend her entire life. When they end up going to different schools, her childhood friend gives her a tough ultimatum: they can't be friends anymore unless Bocchi manages to befriend every single person in her new class.
While an outgoing kid might see that as a fun challenge, it feels totally impossible for a shy girl with severe social anxiety. But despite her intense fear, Bocchi slowly starts to break out of her shell.
With the help of understanding new classmates like Nako Sunao, she begins to tackle her social hurdles one step at a time. It's a sweet, relatable series that genuinely reflects how difficult it can be to find your place in a new environment.
7 My Roommate is a Cat
My Roomate is a Cat sees mystery novelist Subaru Mikazuki experience social anxiety so severe that he can barely talk to his own editor, let alone leave his house. After losing his parents in a sudden tragedy, he completely shut himself away, burying his grief in tight deadlines with close to no physical interaction.
But his isolated bubble bursts when he adopts a stray cat named Haru. Suddenly, taking care of her forces him out of his comfort zone to do everyday things like going to a crowded pet store or talking to a vet.
It’s a gentle reminder that it's okay to need your own space to heal, as long as you have someone, even a furry friend, to help you open up again.
6 Food for the Soul
While having social anxiety, going to a crowded place alone can feel totally overwhelming. Even if there's a spot you are dying to visit, the fear of being surrounded by people is often just too much to handle. That’s exactly what Mako Kawai deals with. She loves good food, but eating at a busy restaurant feels impossible.
Mako wasn’t actually like this. But after entering middle school, she starts to distance herself from others. As a result, Mako found comfort in making up fictional characters from her favorite YouTube show, but it didn't really help.
Her turning point finally comes when she joins a food culture research club, where she meets people who share her interests. Her journey is a sweet reminder that anxiety is easier to manage when you find a safe space to share what you love.
5 Komi Can't Communicate
The title says it all. Komi’s condition makes it difficult for her to communicate with others. Her social anxiety is so severe that whenever she tries to speak to someone, she ends up freezing and trembling. Because of this, she never had any friends until she met Tadano in high school.
Tadano understands her struggle and helps her communicate by writing her thoughts in a notebook. Having his support changes everything, giving Komi the courage to set a massive goal for herself: making 100 friends.
Her story proves that anxiety shouldn’t stop you from making friends.
4 Bocchi the Rock!
Bocchi perfectly captures what social anxiety actually feels like. Just being around people exhausts her to the point that she starts to stutter, overthink, and rush home straight after school. She wants to blend in with others, but taking that first step just feels impossible.
Luckily, Nijika helps her take that first step by recruiting Bocchi into her band on short notice. This helps her open up a bit, and viewers can see her progress as she goes from hiding in a box during her first show to performing in front of a massive crowd.
While she is still figuring things out, viewers will get to see her journey continue in Bocchi the Rock! season 2.
3 A Silent Voice
A Silent Voice might be the most relatable entry for many. Unlike other stories where a character is just naturally shy, Shoya actually started out outgoing. But after a terrible bullying incident with a deaf classmate, he ends up completely isolated and overwhelmed with guilt. He felt so bad about his past that he almost gave up on living.
Years later, he gets a second chance when he reunites with Shoko, the girl he bullied. This time, he has learned sign language so he can properly apologize and understand her.
The movie brilliantly portrays his anxiety by showing ‘X’ marks over people's faces to show how disconnected he feels. It’s a beautiful reminder that our worst mistakes don't define us, and that true healing doesn’t come from isolation, but by finding the courage to reconnect.
2 Horimiya
After being alienated from an early age, Horimiya's Miyamura naturally starts to distance himself from others. The feeling of loneliness makes him think that no one wants to be around someone like him, leading to gloomy thoughts about his self-worth. However, everything changes for him after meeting Hori. She brought some much-needed light into his world.
From that moment on, Miyamura slowly begins to open up and form friendships he never thought possible. His younger self is deeply relatable to anyone who has ever felt left out.
It perfectly captures the painful experience of high school: the feeling of sitting at the back of the classroom, watching other kids having a great time with their friends. It can make you feel bitter, but for most people like Miyamura, it’s just a phase. If you hang in there, you will eventually find people who get you and like you for who you are.
1 The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
What started off as a wholesome romance anime quickly brings viewers to tears once Rintaro’s backstory plays out. Just like Miyamura, Rintaro also didn’t have any friends until high school. Despite his gentle personality, kids misunderstood and feared him because of his tall height and intimidating looks.
The constant rejection from his classmates crushed his self-esteem. It made him give up on socializing and put up a wall between himself and others. It was just as hard for his mother to watch him suffer and feel helpless. All she hoped was for someone to notice what a kindhearted kid he truly is.
The emotional payoff hits when Rintaro finally opens up about his past. Hearing his friends, Usami and Waguri, genuinely validate his character brings him a massive sense of relief. But the true tearjerker is seeing his mother overhear this conversation, crying tears of joy as she realizes her son has finally found the acceptance he always deserved.
