As the world's most popular streaming service, Netflix is home to some great movies. While their expansive catalog covers all kinds of genres, comedy is one that doesn't often get talked about. People bring up award-winning dramas, eye-popping sci-fi projects, terrifying horror films, and more, yet comedies tend to get overlooked. That's a shame because they're typically easy to enjoy, a blast for people to watch as a group, and just a good time from start to finish.

Netflix is home to some of the most iconic and best comedy movies in history. Little Miss Sunshine, The Big Lebowski, Pretty Woman, Zombieland, Borat, Ghostbusters, and Meet the Parents are just a few of those films. They're easy to remember and find on the platform, yet the real treat is discovering the hidden gems within the genre. These are the comedies that not many people know about, or that didn't receive the acclaim from critics that they deserved.

Many of these underrated comedy movies on Netflix are actually originals produced by the streaming service. Since so many Netflix originals are released every year, it's easy for many of them to go unnoticed or not get the respect they deserve, making them great hidden gems.

Bad Trip (2021)

Two of the more popular comedic acts in Hollywood in recent years are Eric André and Lil Rel Howery. The two teamed up, along with the hilarious Tiffany Haddish, for Bad Trip, which blends hidden camera comedy with a scripted story.

Bad Trip follows two best friends as they travel from Florida to New York so one can declare his love for his high school crush, all while the criminal sister of the other chases them since they stole her car. Along the way, they get into all sorts of shenanigans, which is where the hidden camera element comes into play, resulting in some good laughs.

Players (2024)

One of the best places to look for Netflix hidden gems is in the romantic comedy subgenre. So many get put out that people look past, yet they end up being solid. Players is in that category, especially since it features the likes of Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., and Ego Nwodim.

Players centers on a sportswriter (Rodriguez) who has come up with "plays" for successful hook-ups, only to fall for one of her targets. She also comes to realize that her friend has feelings for her, throwing another wrench into everything. It's not the greatest rom-com, yet is a solid one to check out.

Sleeping With Other People (2015)

Speaking of quality rom-coms, Sleeping With Other People is one of the best of the 2010s, yet nobody seems to talk about it. The story focuses on Jake and Lainey, who lose their virginity to each other in college and reconnect later in life at a sex addicts meeting.

The two agree to be platonic friends, only to ultimately fall for one another. Sleeping With Other People is a fun spin on the friends-to-lovers trope and gets boosted by the strong chemistry between Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis in the lead roles.

The Lovebirds (2020)

Michael Showalter has been behind some critically acclaimed movies in recent years, with the most notable being The Eyes of Tammy Faye, The Big Sick, and The Idea of You. One of his best films that remains underrated is The Lovebirds.

Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae play a couple who agree to break up while driving, only to accidentally hit a cyclist with their car. The police show up and murder the cyclist, making the couple witnesses and putting them in grave danger. The end result is an action comedy with some wild scenes.

Your Monster (2024)

Melissa Barrera is most known as a scream queen thanks to Scream and Abigail, or for her musical talents that were displayed in In the Heights. However, she showed off that she can be funny in Your Monster, which blends comedy with fantasy in an enthralling way.

A take on Beauty and the Beast, Your Monster sees Barrera play Laura, an aspiring actress whose ex-boyfriend dumped her after her cancer diagnosis. When he puts on a play that she helped him write, she struggles until she meets a monster in her house, sparking an unexpected romance in this heartfelt film.

Someone Great (2019)

Another underrated comedy starring Gina Rodriguez is Someone Great and it's even better than Players. This one sees Rodriguez portray a journalist who goes out with her best friends before leaving to take a job across the country and dealing with a fresh breakup.

What makes this movie work so well is the bond between the ladies and the heart behind the story of the breakup. Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise, and LaKeith Stanfield make up one of the best supporting casts you'll find anywhere, helping the film to an 84% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Holidate (2020)

We've had plenty of rom-coms centered around Christmas, as dozens seemingly come out each year. So when Holidate showed up on Netflix, a lot of people likely viewed it as just another in a long line, yet it's far more than just a Christmas rom-com.

Holidate follows two perpetually single people who agree to be each other's dates at holidays throughout the year to avoid questions from their families. Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey have tremendous chemistry and the setup allows this to be a rom-com you can watch at any holiday throughout the year.

Shiva Baby (2020)

Shiva Baby is one of those films that came out during the pandemic and was a victim of getting overlooked by so many because of it. Based on the short film of the same name, Shiva Baby centers on a directionless woman who attends a shiva with her parents, where her ex-girlfriend and the male professor she's hooking up with are both also present.

Rachel Sennott and Molly Gordon are fantastic, while Emma Seligman does great work in her feature directorial debut. While it is a comedy, you have to go into this knowing that you'll feel anxious, claustrophobic, and more.

One Of Them Days (2025)

In terms of critical reception, One of Them Days isn't underrated. The film holds a 94% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, was a solid box office success, and found more appreciation on Netflix, leading to production being greenlit on a sequel.

The film follows two best friends as they go through some wild events over the course of one day while trying to get their rent money so they aren't evicted. Keke Palmer is as good as ever, while SZA shines in her feature film debut. They play convincing best friends and are a blast together.

Do Revenge (2022)

The entire premise of Do Revenge is a wild one. Loosely inspired by Strangers on a Train, the film deals with a queen bee (Camila Mendes) who gets taken down at the top of her high school and sets up a wild plot to exact revenge alongside a new girl.

Maya Hawke is great alongside Mendes, while Sophie Turner delivers one of the funniest supporting performances in recent years. The movie also benefits from its clear homages to teen classics like Heathers and Mean Girls. Do Revenge was a hit that has been unjustly forgotten about and is such a fun film.
