Some overlooked 2025 games include Indie platformer Moons of Darsalon, which will be available in February, South of Midnight, an action-adventure coming to Xbox, and even Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which was nominated for Most Anticipated Game before quickly being overshadowed at The Game Awards and ultimately losing to GTA VI - who could have seen that coming? Here's a look at ten games coming out in 2025 that gamers totally forgot about.

10 Moons of Darsalon (February 6)

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC

While Moons of Darsalon is currently available through early access for PC, it is slotted for a February 6, 2025, release on PlayStation and Xbox. The indie platformer is being developed by Dr. Kucho! Games, and it's set to be an exciting retro-futuristic adventure that follows a team of Darsanauts who are lost on a mining mission around the moons of the planet Darsalon.

Players will find colleagues on rescue missions and bring them back to the base station while utilizing various tools such as a laser gun and a terrain-destroying weapon, as well as flying around with a jetpack. The classic arcade-style animations include comic bubbles with hilarious dialogue, exploding enemies, and fluid environments to give the game character.

9 Sulfur (TBD 2025)

Sulfur is a modern old-school action-adventure game that incorporates treasure hunting, weapon crafting, weapon improvements, and survival and exploration elements. Sulfur has a first-person shooter and role-playing feel and is set in the fictional world of Sulfur, where players will face brutal, but adorable monsters.

Sulfur allows players to craft unique builds with a simple and fun inventory system. Multiple playstyles can be utilized depending on the preferred approach, ranging from a strategy-focused to a shoot-em-up style of build. Sulfur is currently in early access, so if players are eager to begin their descent, they can start right away, or wait until the full release next year if they want the most optimal experience.

8 South of Midnight (TBD 2025)

South of Midnight is an upcoming 2025 action-adventure from Compulsion Games and Xbox Studios available on PC and Xbox. The game is set in the Deep South and explores the mythos of a mysterious ancient power in a modern vision of a spiritual folktale. It promises exciting combat and exploration, as well as a powerful narrative and story rooted in a unique place of culture and history.

South of Midnight was originally announced back in June 2023 at the Xbox Games Showcase, and a trailer highlighting gameplay footage was released earlier in 2024. Gameplay jumps back and forth between 2022 and 1995, following a group of four high school girls as the mystery behind what happened one fateful summer is slowly unveiled. The game was initially set for a Q4 2024 release, but to avoid being overshadowed by Life is Strange: Double Exposure, it was pushed to an early 2025 launch.

6 Decadent (TBD 2025)

Decadent is a narrative-based FPS that incorporates horror elements inspired by Lovecraft. Players explore a timeless, haunted land as John Lorn, a royal explorer turned decadent occultist who was traumatized during an experiment and became the host of a mysterious parasite. He must find a balance between good and evil as he tracks down clues about an expedition.

Set during the Great War, players will scavenge plenty of unique environments like frozen tundras and sunless forests. The game utilizes unique survival mechanics, a sanity system that must be balanced to avoid hallucinations, and a progression system built on in-game artifacts. Players will have to backtrack to areas after unlocking new abilities to access previously blocked areas.

5 Dreamed Away (TBD 2025)

Dreamed Away is an action-adventure role-playing game that follows Théo, a lost boy in a mysterious city in 1990s France. It is a beautifully animated pixel-art exploration of the range of human emotions and promises to deliver a powerful narrative as Théo searches for his sister among the dungeons and caves full of ghosts, revenants, and phantoms.

This RPG will not rely on menu-based dialogue selection, but instead "features a unique, fast-paced combat system made of mini-games," as described by the Dreamed Away devs. Dreamed Away is releasing on Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2025, but a demo version is available now on Steam if players want to dive into the macabre and emotional upcoming release.

4 Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time (April 2025)

The next installment in the Fantasy Life Saga, The Girl Who Steals Time has been delayed a few times since its original announcement in 2023, with a final April 2025 launch for the Nintendo Switch as the current target. This open-world RPG lets players build their own unique characters and explore a once-thriving mysterious island, traveling through time and solving various puzzles.

Players will choose between a selection of jobs that they can change at any time, each serving a different function in the game and providing different awards or unlocking certain items. There will be combat mechanics, as well as farming, mining, fishing, exploration, and other simulation-style elements. The Girl Who Steals Time also lets players design their homes and even the layout of their towns, all while working to repair the island.

Brynn's cloak allows her to manipulate natural elements, utilizing ice and fire, while she also has access to telekinesis, allowing her to manipulate the environment. The game features nine distinct bosses, each rewarding the player with new abilities and gear. Eternal Strands arrives on January 28, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

2 The Alters (Q1 2025)

The Alters is an upcoming survival sci-fi game set for a Q1 2025 release that follows Jan, a miner who must control a massive ship on the surface of a planet that is constantly being blasted by radiation from the sun. The game incorporates base-building and survival mechanics, such as building electric pylons and expanding the rooms and capabilities of the ship.

One second of real-time in The Alters equates to one in-game minute and the game functions on a daily timer where the sun will obliterate the entire crew if it rises before players can create Alters using a Rapidium crystal. These Alters are alternate versions of Jan from different realities, and he can choose between them based on the skills required or desired to overcome various obstacles from day to day.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond may not seem like a game that many would forget considering its nomination for Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2024. However, given the quantity of major announcements, and Metroid being up against the likes of Death Stranding 2 and Grand Theft Auto 6, some wish lists are getting overcrowded. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond promises to be a worthy next chapter in the epic franchise.

The game was initially teased way back in 2015 before its official announcement in 2017 and has since changed development studios. It took some time for the project to get back on track, and if no delays derail the project further, the ten-year wait could end soon.
