The Final Fantasy games are full of dramatic, epic moments and storylines. There are plenty of dark themes, character deaths, traumatic backstories, and thrilling action sequences. At the end of the day, most Final Fantasy games are, after all, about saving your friends, your home, and the entire world.
10 Cid Not Really Being Dead in FF 4
All That Drama For Nothing
The Final Fantasy has not been afraid to push boundaries by killing off playable characters. This has been done with some devastating results several times in the franchise, with the exception of Final Fantasy 4.
In this game, no one ever seems to stay dead. There are a number of scenes where you think a character has died, only to find them alive and well again later in your journey. The most notable example is Cid, who blasts himself to pieces in a massive explosion... only to be found recovering later in the game. It cheapens the moment and is an example of a dumb plot point that's more frustrating than silly.
9 Speaking To Beavers in FF 2
It's Never Mentioned Again
On the sillier side of dumb Final Fantasy moments, there's the beaver scene from Final Fantasy 2. The party is exploring a cave full of beavers who only speak in "snooks" and "chits." At that moment, a character named Guy, who has barely spoken a single word until now, steps up. He simply announces: "Guy speak beaver."
Apparently, Guy was raised by wolves, which somehow gives him the ability to speak all animal languages. The rest of the party doesn't question this, and it's never mentioned again, making it one of the dumbest moments in Final Fantasy.
8 Rikku Being Scared Of Lightning And Thunder In FF 10
Scramble To Safety
Rikku is a badass, claw-wielding fighter in Final Fantasy 10. She's loud and brash, and always up for a challenge... until, that is, the party makes it to the Thunder Plains.
At that point, it becomes clear that the seemingly fearless character has one major phobia: she's absolutely terrified of thunder and lightning. This is played for laughs in one of the dumbest scenes in the FF series. Upon reaching the Plains, Rikku breaks down. She falls to the ground and crawls comically to Tidus. She clings to his leg and begs him to let her take a break from the endless storm. This is so out of character for Rikku that it makes the moment even more absurd.
7 The Best Insult In The World In FF 4
A Legendary Meme Is Born
When Final Fantasy 4 came out in 1991, Square (at the time sans Enix) was still learning how to localize its games for a Western audience. The translations for the game so far had been high quality, all things considered.
But then, the game threw a ridiculous liner into the mix. In a scene between a prince and a bard, the bard accuses the prince of causing his daughter's death. He does this by uttering one of the most memed lines in the history of Final Fantasy: "You Spoony Bard!" It's a dumb line that's stuck in the minds of gamers ever since.
6 The Macarena Reference In FF 10
Hey Macarena, Aye!
The Final Fantasy games don't take place in our world, so you wouldn't expect them to have any references to pop culture. But games don't exist in a vacuum, and sometimes a pop culture moment sneaks into the distant worlds of the FF games.
This was especially jarring in Final Fantasy 10, which references one of the best known songs of the mid-1990s: The Macarena. In the infamous scene, posted to YouTube by ALICExMUSICxEDITS, Tidus mispronounces the "Macalania Temple" as the "Macarena Temple." When he's corrected, he responds with a ridiculous rendition of the song's famous "Aye!"
This is another result of localization gone rogue, as the Japanese version of the scene doesn't make any reference to the song.
5 Barrett And Red XIII In Disguise In FF 7 and FF 7 Rebirth
No One Will Recognize Them Now
The Final Fantasy 7 remake project sent the beloved cast of the 1997 title on an adventure that feels both familiar and completely new. There are plenty of silly moments in the game to break up the seriousness and take your mind off the fate you know is coming for the wonderful Aerith.
One of the most endearingly dumb moments in both the original and Rebirth involves Barrett and Red XIII. The two don disguises while on board a ship. Instead of Barrett dressing as a soldier and Red XIII pretending to be a guard dog or something, the dog-like character cosplays as a human soldier while the burly Barrett wears an adorable sailor outfit.
The absurdity of the moment makes it one of the dumbest moments of the game—as long as you can overlook the yellow paint conveniently painted over all the climbable rocks. Though many fans might argue that's dumb in a bad way.
4 The Nonsensical Wedding Scene In FF 10
Where Was Yuna Hiding That Staff?
In Final Fantasy 10, Yuna is forced into a marriage. As the wedding begins, Tidus literally crashes the party on an airship, sparking an absurd sequence of events. First, the groom acts surprised that Yuna planned to betray him, even though she had already done it once by that point. Then, she pulls out her staff from behind her back—despite the fact that the wedding is taking place on an open platform in the sky.
In a seven-year thread about this scene, GameFAQs member starcrunch061 notes that this scene "showed Square's innate misunderstanding of how 3D works. The developers seem to treat this scene as if the characters are in a tunnel." Luckily, Square Enix seem to have the hang of immersive 3D environments now—but at the time, the silliness of the moment made the dramatic moment into a joke.
3 Gilgamesh's Shenanigans In FF14
From A Major Bad Guy To Comic Relief
The Final Fantasy franchise has plenty of recurring characters, from Chocobos and Cactaurs to the ever-present airship pilot, Cid. One of these returning characters is Gilgamesh, a sword collector, interdimensional traveler, and demigod.
Gilgamesh plays different roles in each game, sometimes acting as an ally and other times a boss monster or a summon. In Final Fantasy 14, the character completes his transformation from one of the main antagonists in FF 5 to comic relief in the ongoing MMO.
In FF 14, Gilgamesh shows up disguised as a traveling samurai named Yojimbo. His silly antics turn him from a legendary god-like beast into a petty thief with a huge ego, a tendency to pout and get his feelings hurt, and a pet rooster that he painted green and named Enkidu.
This is made even sillier by other characters constantly calling him "Greg." How the mighty have fallen...
Mander-Mander-Manderville Man, Doing What Only A Manderville Can
Speaking of Final Fantasy 14, the MMO is the proud home of the dumbest shenanigans to ever grace the franchise: the Manderville family. The gentlemanly detective Hildibrand Manderville travels around the world with his trusty explosives-loving assistant, solving cases and helping people.
A typical scene from a Hildibrand quest may involve his swole father stripping down to his underwear, launching Hildy into the air, spinning him around until he's a blur, then suplexing him into the ground, leaving only his legs sticking out. In his many adventures, Hildibrand has come across aliens, alternate dimensions, zombies, and clones—and he's dealt with them all in the dumbest, zaniest ways.
1 Sabin Suplexing a Train In FF6
Simply An Iconic Moment
Final Fantasy 6 contains one of the most ridiculous moments in the series, which has lived on in memes and references. While exploring the Phantom Forest, the adventurers are trapped on the sentient Phantom Train enemy.
During the fight against the train boss monster, players discovered that Sabin, one of the party members, could use his "Suplex" move against the giant train. This entails leaping into the air with the train, then slamming it back down into the ground. It's one of the most memorable silly moments in Final Fantasy.
