Custom image created by Evan D. MullicaneRomance anime has gotten a pretty bad reputation, and unfortunately, it's easy to see why. Every genre of anime has boring or overdone tropes, and the romance genre might have the worst of them all.
The romance genre can be filled with incredibly boring main characters, narratives that don't make any sense, and uncomfortable moments that turn away any and all potential fans. Thankfully, there are a handful of romantic anime franchises that not only avoid these pitfalls but thrive in spite of them.
There aren't many, but a select number of romance series are outstanding. These are series so good that even someone who hates the romance genre will come around, proving that the genre itself is capable of producing some of the best anime series of all time.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is outlandishly good. It's one of the few series that can marry the comedy and romance genres together perfectly, and at times, it's hard to tell which it leans into more. It's as funny as it is enchanting, and there isn't a dull moment throughout the entire series.
Kaguya-sama stars the titular Shinomiya Kaguya as one of the smartest characters in anime who has a massive crush on Shirogane Miyuki, another genius. Shirogane has a crush on Kaguya, but instead of admitting their feelings for one another, they try and outwit their potential lover into admitting their feelings first.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai is a rare series in that, thematically, it is so much deeper than its title makes it appear. One of the biggest and most annoying tropes in romance anime is overdone fan service, or characters looking lewd out of nowhere. Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai avoids this trope with panache.
The series is unreasonably thought-provoking, explores some of the deepest and most moving themes in romance, and stars an exceptional cast of characters that fans can't help but fall for. Each character brings something different to the table, and, after watching the series, there isn't a fan who can claim they didn't cry at least once.
Skip to Loafer is one of the most refreshing romance anime series in years. It's not as much of a romance anime as some of the other franchises, but the (potential) romance that it does feature is nothing short of heart melting. Mitsumi Iwakura is one of the most delightful main characters in years, and the more that she's on-screen, the better the series is.

How 2004’s Greatest Anime Created The 2010s’ Most Important Musician
Crunchyroll has recently announced a collaboration with one of the biggest names in music, and it all happened because of this 2004 masterpiece.
Sousuke Shima is a perfect opposite to Mitsumi. When she's focused and dedicated, he's laid back and relaxed. Together, they make a duo that's almost too good to be true, and their chemistry is a big reason why even people who don't like romance anime will like Skip and Loafer.
Tsuki ga Kirei
Tsuki ga Kirei is quietly one of the best romance anime series ever made. It's only 12 episodes long and tells a better story in less time than it takes most series to get off the ground. The series stars Kotarou Azumi and Akane Mizuno as two junior high school students who are falling in love for the first time.
No romance anime captures the feelings of a first love better than Tsuki ga Kirei. It's weird, awkward, and undeniably wholesome all at once. Nobody is ever good at love or expressing their emotions when they're a kid, and Tsuki ga Kirei captures that uncomfortably funny energy masterfully.
You and I Are Polar Opposites
You and I Are Polar Opposities might have made a name for itself as 2026's best romance anime. It's a lighthearted romp from start to finish, and it does a great job of not making any of the mistakes that normally bog down an otherwise quality romance series.
You and I Are Polar Opposites is a series with a perfect name as it expertly describes Tani and Suzuki, as they couldn't be more different. Tani is quiet, introverted, and more than happy being by himself. Suzuki is an extrovert to her core, talking to as many people as she possibly can. Together, they bring the best out of one another and create one of the cutest relationships in anime.
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! isn't just a stellar anime series: it's one of the most innovative franchises in years. Most romance series (rightfully) focus on the characters who enter relationships, but what about the characters who try and fail? That's where Makeine! steps in.
Makeine! stars the losers of the love game — the characters who try to enter relationships but end up failing for one reason or another. These characters are immediately lovable, almost too charming, and funny enough to make Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! a contender for one of the funniest romance series around.
Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again
Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again has one of the best premises in romance anime. It's not a hyperbole to say there really isn't another series like it, and honestly, there may never be. The titular Grandpa and Grandma find a golden apple in their apple orchard, eat it, and return to their physical youth.
As young people once again, Grandpa and Grandma are able to do all the things in their relationship that they never got a chance to. It's a heart-warming story starring a couple who are already together as they rediscover all the reasons why they fell for one another in the first place.
Horimiya
Horimiya might be the single best romance anime in the past decade. There are a few top-tier contenders, but there aren't many better romance-driven anime series than this one. Horimiya expertly avoids all the normal tropes that would get in its way, showcases an adorable romance, and features some of the most substantive side characters around.
Horimiya excels where other romance series falter. It's one of the best series that can be watched in less than 15 episodes, and it became so popular that the chapters of the manga it's based on that weren't initially animated got brought back through a series titled Horimiya: The Missing Pieces.
Blue Box
Blue Box is as lovely as it is heartbreaking. It's one of the most mature romance series ever made, and it tells its story with a level of dignity and grace that it deserves. A lot of even somewhat decent romance series can feel childish at times, and Blue Box is anything but.
It's a grounded, realistic romance series that shows the highs and lows of love. Not everything in love is easy, and Blue Box shows the reality of relationships expertly. The first season hit the ground running, and with a second season on the way, it looks like Blue Box is only going to get better from here.
A Sign of Affection
AjiadoA Sign of Affection is so good it feels like its bragging. From the creative, well-founded premise, to the amazing cast of characters, to the artwork that just won't quit, A Sign of Affection is nearly flawless. It's one of those series that you wish you could forget about so you could experience it for the first time all over again.
A Sign of Affection is a series that anyone can watch. From shōnen stans to people who aren't familiar with anime, there isn't a soul who won't enjoy this sensation. In less than 15 episodes, A Sign of Affection showcases one of the best narratives and relationships around, and if there's a downside to the series, it's that there isn't more.
