10 Best Quotes In The Devil Wears Prada 2

3 weeks ago 21

Returning to the world of Runway in The Devil Wears Prada 2 feels like a perfect fit, as its sharp script delivers viewers a wardrobe of truly exceptional one-liners. With Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Stanley Tucci reprising their iconic roles, there were plenty of new and returning characters on display, making this legacy sequel one of the rare long-awaited follow-ups that didn’t feel out of style.

It’s not easy to get things right when following up on one of the best comedies of the 2000s, but this was a film that moved with the times and had a lot to say about how much the fashion world has changed since Andy Sachs first stepped into Runway 20 years before. Ultimately, The Devil Wears Prada 2 proves that some stories never go out of fashion, delivering more quotes and standout moments than Paris Fashion Week.

“May The Bridges I Burn Light My Way”

It was incredibly exciting to see the return of Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada 2, where Emily Blunt’s exceptional performance maintained all the arrogance and hidden vulnerability within this iconic workaholic. After trading her Runway role for an advertising role at Dior, her relationship with tech mogul Benji Barnes (Justin Theroux) put her at the center of corporate threats that threatened the magazine's future.

Hearing Emily utter the hilarious line, “May the bridges I burn light my way,” as she psyches herself up in the mirror, echoes the contradictions within her character, as she forces herself to be ruthless while burying the more sentimental side of her personality. Being ruthless does not come naturally to her, but she knows that to make it to the top of the heap, you must not be afraid to burn a few bridges.

“Some Of The Bodies Are Very Interesting. Very Body… Negative?”

Meryl Streep seemingly stepped back into her role as the editor-in-chief of Runway, Miranda Priestly, in this hotly anticipated sequel. However, while Miranda’s cutthroat demeanor remained as vivacious as ever, the world around her had changed, and she was slightly out of step with modern standards of acceptability in the fashion world, particularly regarding body positivity.

This was perfectly encapsulated when she tried to see the term herself after witnessing a fashion showcase with a diverse roster of women, which she described as “very interesting, very body… negative?” While there have been accusations of fatphobia within this statement, it highlights that Miranda is trying to be culturally sensitive and socially conscious while just getting the terminology totally wrong.

“Look What TJ Maxx Dragged In”

Stanley Tucci as Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada 2

To see Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs reunited with Stanley Tucci’s Nigel Kipling was truly delightful, as Miranda’s right-hand man was always quick with a witty one-liner or hilarious turn of phrase. The moment Andy entered Miranda’s office, he didn’t disappoint as he blurted out, “Look what TJ Maxx dragged in,” showing how he remembered her with fondness and some light teasing.

As a subtle jab delivered with total confidence, Tucci’s performance as Nigel has always been one of the best parts of The Devil Wears Prada movies, as his character keeps everything moving behind the scenes while maintaining his signature sense of humor. With TJ Maxx being considered a step below the high fashion seen in Runway, Nigel kindly steps in to offer Andy a new wardrobe as she settles into her new role as features editor.

We’ve heard a lot about girl math in recent years, and it seems Emily Charlton is no stranger to this dissociative kind of logic. In this case, calorie counting becomes meaningless when sharing an appetizer with Andy Sachs near the film’s conclusion, after they’ve buried the hatchet and accepted that their previous rivalry could be replaced with genuine friendship.

When Emily tells Andy, “Don’t you know that shared carbs have no calories?” she’s inviting her not only to eat together but to grow closer in their friendship. This moment becomes all the more poignant with the knowledge that Emily had actually called Andy years before to try to become friends, although Andy dismissed the phone call as a simple butt dial.

“Who Let Her In Here?”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is full of incredible cameos from a real who's who of the fashion world. But of all the icons and divas who appear on screen, perhaps the most notable was pop sensation Lady Gaga, who performs at the runway gala during Milan Fashion Week at the behest of Miranda Priestly.

As two incredibly big personalities, Gaga and Miranda make for an interesting dynamic; when we see them interact, it’s clear they have some unaddressed history, as their charged encounter implies a world of unfinished business. While the pair play nice as they speak backstage, Gaga’s assertion of “Who let her in here?” leaves no doubt in our minds that these two titans of the fashion industry had clashed before.

“Have You Heard Of Christmas?”

Seeing all the gorgeous fashion on display throughout The Devil Wears Prada 2 was truly a sight to behold, but our down-to-earth protagonist, Andy Sachs, was well aware of how out of reach these luxuries are for the average person. As she marveled at the litany of high fashion on display, she balked at how anyone could afford it, to which Emily hilariously replied: “Have you heard of Christmas?

This fantastic one-liner perfectly encapsulated the juxtaposition between the two characters: Andy thought in terms of real-world financial struggles, while Emily thought in terms of status, image, and the extravagant world she had fully immersed herself in. Emily’s worldview even makes sense, considering she was dating a billionaire tech mogul and had access to anything she wanted.

“We Have A… Cafeteria?”

When Runway gets taken over by Jay Ravitz, the finance-bro heir to the Elias-Clarke publishing house, it’s clear that there are going to be some changes on the horizon for Miranda Priestly. While Miranda is used to ruling the roost and never slumming it with the everyday workers, she’s forced to do something she’s never done before when Jay suggests they hold their meeting in the cafeteria.

With shock and horror, Miranda hilariously asks, “We have a cafeteria?” as the entire staff is perplexed when they see her walk through the doors. The moment perfectly underlined just how detached Miranda had become from the ordinary realities of her own workplace, while also poking fun at the elitist bubble she so comfortably existed within for so long, and was now being ripped out of.

“I Always Knew That You Would End Up Doing Something Great”

As the titular Devil in The Devil Wears Prada movies, it is easy to see Miranda Priestly as a villain. However, there’s something much softer about Meryl Streep's performance in this sequel, as we see her power stripped away, and she’s forced to suck up to the previously unseen forces that control things above her.

With this more grounded side on display, Miranda grows closer to Andy and even invites her to a dinner party at her home, where she reveals she’s set to become Global Head of Content at Elias-Clarke. Crediting Andy for her role in her success, Miranda offers a rare moment of warmth, telling her, “I always knew that you would end up doing something great,” revealing the softer side hidden beneath her hard exterior.

“Stockholm Called. They Want Their Syndrome Back”

Rachel Bloom Faye's Vision/Cover Images

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is full of great one-liners, but perhaps the best came from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom, who played the small role of Talia, Andy’s close friend. It’s Talia who suggested Andy take the features job at Runway, and use this as an opportunity to make bank writing a tell-all book about what it’s like to work under the notorious Miranda Priestly.

While Andy is interested in this prospect, she soon grows reluctant as she sees Miranda’s struggles in the modern fashion world. When she tells Talia she’s no longer sure, she quickly responds, “Stockholm called. They want their syndrome back.” As a perfectly timed quip, it showcases Andy being stuck between two worlds, the high-stakes fashion of Runway and the more respectable investigative journalism she wishes to pursue.

“This Whole Time, You Thought This Job Just Dropped Into Your Lap”

Anne Hathaway as Andrea Sachs, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestley, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel look worried and walk in an office in The Devil Wears Prada 2

The big reveal at the end of The Devil Wears Prada 2 was that Nigel had been instrumental in Andy's return to Runway from the beginning. With some cleverly timed text messages, he had subtly orchestrated the whole endeavor as he told Andy, “This whole time, you thought this job just dropped into your lap. Come here. So sweet. Forever my girl.”

This emotionally charged reveal surely brought a few tears from longtime fans of the original, as it showcased the deep connection and care Nigel has for Andy. As a character that’s often underestimated by those around him, it felt appropriate that Nigel would be the one pulling the strings all along, as he’s subtly always been the dark horse of this cinematic world and a fan-favorite in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
