Now that Landman season 1 has finished, fans of Taylor Sheridan's dramatic look into the oil industry may be looking for similar shows or movies to replace it. After the ending of Landman season 1, it'll be a long time until viewers can see more of Tommy Norris' (Billy Bob Thornton) struggles with the oil industry. While Landman season 2 is unconfirmed but likely, it's still at least several months away. Fans of the comedy-drama may be looking for something new to fill in the hole Landman has left, and there are luckily quite a few options to choose from.
One of the hardest parts about finding something to watch after Landman isn't finding great shows and movies, it's finding ones that can match all the different tones Landman touched on. At different times, Landman was a comedy, a family drama, an action thriller, and a legal procedural. With so many different tones and genres, and with such a sprawling and all-encompassing story, there are quite a few great things about Landman that are worth revisiting in a different movie or show. These 10 offer a great take on at least one of the aspects that made Landman so engrossing.

Your changes have been saved
Tulsa King is a Paramount+ original TV series starring Sylvester Stallone as Dwight "The General" Manfredi. After being released from prison for murder, The General is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he quickly sets up a new criminal empire. Tulsa King marks Stallone's first leading role in a TV show.

The best way to scratch the itch for Taylor Sheridan's writing is through another one of his shows. While Terence Winter acts as the showrunner for Tulsa King, it was created by Taylor Sheridan, and it's probably the closest replacement for Landman. Tulsa King follows Dwight "The General" Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) as he goes from being a New York gangster to starting his own criminal empire in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are plenty of laughs to be had in Tulsa King as Dwight tries to adjust to life in the country, and Stallone is just as charismatic a lead as Billy Bob Thornton.

Aside from the similar settings and Taylor Sheridan's name, Tulsa King has even more in common with Landman. The cast of Tulsa King is just as deep and well-developed as the cast of Landman, and there are plenty of characters to both love and hate in each. Both shows also feature a sprawling story about men trying to build an empire and running into enemies and opposition at every corner. The risks Dwight takes with rival gangs and the law are just as suspenseful and entertaining as the gamble Tommy plays with a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Taylor Sheridan isn't just known for shows, however, and one of his movies also scratches the Landman itch quite effectively. Hell or High Water follows two brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) as they rob a series of banks with Texas Rangers (Jeff Bridges) hot on their tails. While Landman did have a heavy focus on crime through its cartel storyline, Hell or High Water also centers around oil, as Pine's character is robbing banks to purchase oil pumpjacks to provide for his children. Hell or High Water even focuses on a broken family trying to heal, which was a major part of Landman.

Chris Pine And Jeff Bridges’ 7-Year-Old Western Is A Reminder That Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan Needs To Make Another Movie
One of Taylor Sheridan's best movies, Hell or High Water, is a reminder that the Yellowstone writer makes great films and he needs to do another.
Hell or High Water also has more broad similarities to Landman. Like with all of Taylor Sheridan's movies, Hell or High Water is a fast-paced roller coaster of a film, and it expertly leads audiences to each new step in its plot. It also has some extremely well-developed and believable characters struggling against each other in a morally ambiguous situation, which makes it very similar to Landman's focus on the oil industry. Sheridan has a very distinct writing style that a lot of viewers enjoy, and Hell or High Water is one of the best ways to get more of it.
8 Bad News Bears
Billy Bob Thornton's Bad News Bears Character Is Very Similar To Tommy Norris
Your changes have been saved
Bad News Bears is a sports comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie. The story follows an inept, down-on-his-luck coach, played by Walter Matthau, as he attempts to turn a ragtag group of young misfits into a competitive little league baseball team. The movie explores themes of teamwork, determination, and the impact of adult influence on childhood sports.
Release Date July 22, 2005
Runtime 113 Minutes

Billy Bob Thornton's performance as Tommy Norris was one of the best things about Landman, and he already played a character that was just as hilarious. In Bad News Bears, the 2005 remake of Walter Matthau's 1976 comedy, Thornton plays Morris Buttermaker, a drinking, smoking, swearing head coach of a terrible little league baseball team. Morris and Tommy have a lot in common, from their bad habits to their crass sense of humor, and Bad News Bears is almost guaranteed to generate as many laughs as Landman did.

Billy Bob Thornton Already Played A Character With Tommy Norris’ Crass Sense Of Humor 19 Years Before Landman
Billy Bob Thornton is hilarious as Tommy Norris in Landman, but he was just as crass and rudely funny in a 19-year-old sports comedy movie remake.
On top of all of its rude humor, Bad News Bears also has a very important similarity to Landman. Both the movie and the show reserve plenty of time to seeing Billy Bob Thornton insult other characters, but both Bad News Bears and Landman are also filled with heart. Morris goes from an alcoholic jerk to a kind and caring mentor to a group of kids, and by the end of Landman season 1, Tommy went from a depressed workaholic to a man who was rebuilding his family. The humor draws you in, but the emotional transformation of Thornton's characters has the real staying power.

While no one can perfectly match Billy Bob Thornton's brand of comedy, Letterkenny comes the closest. Letterkenny focuses on the titular town of Letterkenny, Canada, and particularly Wayne, Daryl, Katy, and Squirrely Dan. What makes Letterkenny both similar to Landman and one of the best Canadian sitcoms ever is its brand of humor. In Landman, Tommy always has an exasperated remark or witty saying to use in any situation, and the characters in Letterkenny somehow have even more. Tommy compares Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) to a two-dollar Rolex, and Wayne compares a hockey player's body hair to a Dutch girl.

The sitcom Letterkenny is a great example of truly Canadian humor, which is made even more evident in some of the series' funniest quotes.
Probably the best part of Letterkenny for fans of Landman is actually one of its biggest differences from Thornton's show. Unlike Landman, Letterkenny rarely gets very serious, and it never reaches the same level of stress and tension that Tommy encounters on the patch. Letterkenny is great for anyone who wants a dose of Tommy's wit and humor in 20-minute increments without also getting Landman's drama and tragedy. It's a much more relaxing watch, and with 12 seasons and a spinoff show, Letterkenny will keep fans occupied for quite a while.

For fans who liked Landman's focus on the oil industry and its intense, dramatic situations, There Will Be Blood is a great replacement. There Will Be Blood takes a close and harsh look at the oil industry in the same way Landman does, but it focuses on the roots of the industry in the early 20th century. Landman had its fair share of death, destruction, and tragedy, but There Will Be Blood is even darker. The film follows Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he fights with local evangelicals (Paul Dano) over their oil rights, and it quickly devolves into a mess of greed and violence.
Landman had its fair share of death, destruction, and tragedy, but There Will Be Blood is even darker.
The oil industry is one similarity between Landman and There Will Be Blood, but the real comparison is in their main characters. Daniel Plainview is basically the inverse of Tommy Norris. For much of Landman, Tommy was trying to pull away from the oil industry and rebuild his family, but his job kept pulling him back in. For all of There Will Be Blood, Daniel consistently chooses profits and oil over everything else. If you thought Landman didn't go far enough to show Tommy's internal struggle with the oil industry, There Will Be Blood is the perfect replacement.

Landman is a great example of a neo-Western, a Western story that takes place in the modern day, so it's easy to recommend one of the best neo-Westerns ever made to replace it. No Country for Old Men is a must-watch movie for anyone who is a fan of the way Landman pitted cowboys against the cartel. No Country for Old Men follows Llewlyn Moss (Josh Brolin) as he tries to run from Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) with $2 million of the cartel's money. A series of inventive shootouts and tense games of chance ensues across West Texas.

Aside from being set where Landman was filmed, No Country for Old Men also offers quite a few things that fans of the show will appreciate. No Country for Old Men basically takes the cartel plot that ran throughout the first season of Landman and makes it more overt, bloodier, and more intense. There are even common themes between the movie and the show: they both heavily examine the idea of a world that has moved on from the days of outlaws and oil tycoons, and the men who hang on tooth and nail despite that fact.

Of all the shows and movies that are like Landman, George Clooney's 2007 legal thriller Michael Clayton seems the most different. However, once you get past the surface, there are quite a few similarities between Michael Clayton and Landman that make it great to watch after Taylor Sheridan's show. The biggest similarity is in its main characters: both Tommy Norris and Michael Clayton are essentially the enforcers of their respective companies. They're called in when a job needs to be done and done quick, and both of them find themselves in situations that are much more complicated than they bargained for.
It's certainly a different setting and genre from Landman, but Michael Clayton does touch on quite a few of the same themes and character moments.
Michael Clayton follows Clooney's eponymous character, a fixer for a law firm, as he unravels a massive conspiracy and survives multiple attempts on his life. That immediately sounds reminiscent of Tommy's job as a landman and the constant threats he gets from the cartel and even his own employees. Both Michael and Tommy also have to navigate a world full of cutthroat lawyers and business people while trying to keep their morals intact. It's certainly a different setting and genre from Landman, but Michael Clayton does touch on quite a few of the same themes and character moments.

Landman somewhat uniquely blends high-stakes drama and tragedy with crass humor and hilarious insults, but it isn't a completely novel idea. In fact, Succession managed to blend corporate drama and snarky humor a few years before Landman even started. Succession follows Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his adult children, who are vying for control of his massive media empire. In their quest for the family fortune, each of Logan's children and their spouses throw hysterical insults at one another, expose their own idiocy, and revel in each other's mistakes, all of which Tommy Norris did at some point in Landman season 1.

From hilarious moments to heartbreaking scenes, Succession’s best episodes blurred the line between drama and comedy to deliver instant classics.
Succession is also one of the best ways to replicate Tommy's struggle to reconnect with Angela (Ali Larter) and Ainsley. Throughout Succession's four seasons, spliced between the vitriol and hate each sibling holds for one another, there are moments of legitimate familial love. The same is true for Landman: even though Tommy comes across as crotchety and mean, and Angela comes across as materialistic and vapid, the pair have legitimate love for each other and for their children, and their attempts to reunite their family are earnest. While Succession certainly isn't wholesome, it does have the same trappings of people trying to salvage some form of family.
2 Mad Men
Landman Fans Who Want More Of Monty's High Stakes Business Can See Jon Hamm Play An Advertising Executive In Mad Man

Mad Men is the award-winning show created by Matthew Wiener that stars Jon Hamm as Don Draper, a masterful ad man in the high-speed advertising world. Set between the 1960s and 70s; Mad Men explores this "Golden Age" of advertising, where everyone has something to sell, and those who don't score a quick win are out of the game. The series also examines the world from a few other character's perspectives, such as Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), a young woman who starts as a secretary for Don despite the difficulty for women to be taken seriously in business during this time, rises to the challenge to become an ad woman of her own.

Tommy and the Norris family aren't the only draw of Landman, however. Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) also played a large role in the show, and his character was very reminiscent of an earlier role Hamm took on that made him a massive star. In Mad Men, Hamm plays Don Draper, an advertising company executive who tries to balance his work with his carefully created personality and his increasingly unstable home life. Mad Men is basically a view of what Landman could have been if it focused on Monty's side of M-Tex, and watching Hamm navigate delicate business situations is endlessly entertaining.

Mad Men Cast & Character Guide
From Jon Hamm to Elisabeth Moss to John Slattery, the cast of Mad Men is full of widely praised actors, each playing a complex character.
There's another, rather simple, reason to watch Mad Men after Landman. Mad Men is widely regarded as one of the best TV shows of all time, and it's even better than Landman. Hamm is perfectly cast as Don Draper, and there quite simply isn't a better corporate drama out there. It's easy to recommend Mad Men to anybody who likes television, and it also scratches the itch of wanting to see more of Monty's character from Landman. It may be a different industry in a different century, but Jon Hamm is even more engrossing in Mad Men than he is in Landman.

Perhaps the best show to replace Landman is one that features two of its stars. Both Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm starred in separate seasons of Fargo, FX's spinoff show based on the Coen Brothers' movie. Fargo is also a neo-Western like Landman, and it also features a dark and often dry sense of humor just like Taylor Sheridan's show. While Fargo is an anthology that focuses more on the criminal underworld than Landman does, there are still plenty of similarities between the shows.
Both of their Fargo roles offer the Landman actors a chance to get deliciously sinister, and it's certainly an interesting change of pace to see Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm play villains after rooting for them throughout Landman season 1.
The differences between Fargo and Landman are also another reason to watch the former. In Fargo, both Thornton and Hamm play decidedly darker and more evil characters than they do in Landman. Thornton plays hitman Lorne Malvo in Fargo season 1, while Hamm plays power-hungry sheriff Roy Tillman in Fargo season 5. Both of their Fargo roles offer the Landman actors a chance to get deliciously sinister, and it's certainly an interesting change of pace to see Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm play villains after rooting for them throughout Landman season 1.
