Runtime 103 Minutes

An underseen yet unique biopic from last year could find more fans with its new streaming debut this week. Winner was charged with leaking documents to the public that highlight Russia’s interference with the 2016 United States presidential election. As a result, she was sentenced to over five years in prison, the harshest punishment for that crime.

It brings an absurd and effective spark to the movie, which is further elevated by the outstanding performance of Jones in the lead role.

While the details of the true story might make it sound like Winner is an intense political thriller, the movie goes in an unexpected direction, making it a comedy. The supporting cast includes Kathryn Newton, Connie Britton, and Zach Galifianakis.

9 Fresh Kills (2023)

Available February 7 On Hulu

Jennifer Esposito as Francine shouting at Connie and looking angry in Fresh Kills

Fresh Kills is a recent mob movie that took the genre in an unexpected and fascinating direction. The film centers around a member of the Italian American mafia in Staten Island in the 1980s. However, the focus is on the women in his life, with his wife and two teenage daughters struggling with the reality of what their father does for a living and how it affects their lives.

Having a mob movie told from the perspective of someone who is on the outside of this world, only seeing the glimpses and hints of the dark truth is a brilliant approach. The film serves as the directorial debut of Jennifer Esposito, who also stars in the movie as the mother of this family. Domenick Lombardozzi plays the patriarch of the family, drawing from many mob roles, like The Irishman and Tulsa King.

Runtime 105 minutes

One of the most underrated action movies of the last few years may be able to find a wider audience now that it is becoming available for streaming at home. Kill is an Indian action movie that follows a former commando who boards a train in an attempt to stop his one true love from marrying a man she does not love. While that might seem like a typical romance film, Kill lives up to its name once a band of armed thieves board the train and begin terrorizing the passengers, leading the love-struck hero to embrace his killer instincts.

For fans who love the kinetic fight scenes of the John Wick movies, Kill is a must-watch action flick. It is brutal and bloody with hand-to-hand combat inside the cramped train, making for some truly amazing fight sequences.

7 Let’s Start A Cult (2024)

Available February 4 On Hulu

Stavros Halkias holding hands with people in a circle and looking down in Let's Start a Cult

For fans of dark comedies, Let’s Start a Cult delivers a wild premise that could lead to big laughs. Comedian Stavros Halkias co-wrote and stars in the comedy as a devoted follower of a small cult who misses out when the rest of the followers take part in a mass suicide. However, when he discovers that his former cult leader is not dead, he decides to team up with him in order to start again with a new cult.

While the subject matter will obviously be too much for some viewers to find humor in, there is a lot of fun to be had with this eccentric indie comedy. Seeing all of the oddball characters who get recruited for this new endeavor is hilarious, while they also begin to form a pseudo-family of fellow outcasts in a surprisingly touching way.

6 In The Summers (2024)

Available February 5 On Hulu

In the Summers is an underseen but beautiful movie that takes a stunning new approach to a coming-of-age story. The movie is told over the course of four summers following two sisters as they leave their home in California to spend the summer with their loving yet volatile father in Mexico. Through the different periods of their youth, the film shows how the sisters have changed, how their idea of home has changed, and how their relationship with their father has changed.

Similar to the Best Picture winner Moonlight, the movie effortlessly switches between the different timelines and different actors playing the sisters while all still feeling like one cohesive story. However, it also uses the framing technique to really hammer how the emotional impact of seeing time pass in such a matter-of-fact way.

Release Date August 16, 2024

Runtime 94 Minutes

Didi might be a small movie, but it is one that found its way onto a number of best-of-the-year lists at the end of 2024. The coming-of-age story is set in the 2000s and follows teenage Taiwanese American boy Chris (Izaac Wang) during his summer break before starting high school. As he contends with his chaotic family life, which includes his single mother and college-bound sister, Chris struggles with his own identity and attempts to fit into the teenage social scene.

The movie is a funny and poignant look at an especially awkward time in every teenager's life. It deals with cultural aspects that add a touching element to the story, but it is a very relatable story about a young man who is trying to be who he thinks everyone wants him to be but is still figuring himself out. It is funny, uncomfortable, heartbreaking, and smart.

3 Kinda Pregnant (2025)

Available February 5 On Netflix

Amy Schumer returns for her first leading film role in several years with the new Netflix original comedy Kinda Pregnant. Schumer stars in the movie as Lainey, a woman who becomes jealous of her pregnant best friend and wears a fake pregnant belly in order to get attention. However, after meeting the man of her dreams who now thinks she is pregnant, Lainey finds herself trapped in the lie.

Schumer co-wrote the movie which could set it up to be a repeat of her breakout movie role in Trainwreck. Indeed, the film is filled with the same kind of R-rated humor that Schumer handles so well while also allowing her to show some of her dramatic acting skills. She is also joined in the movie by some hilarious people, including Will Forte, Jillian Bell, and Damon Wayans Jr.

2 Piece By Piece (2024)

Available February 6 On Peacock

One of the most unique biopics in recent memory is now available to enjoy at home. Piece by Piece tells the story of Pharrell Williams and his rise to becoming one of the most influential names in music, producing hits for some of the biggest stars while also having his own successful career as a performer. The movie mixes narrative and documentary-like interviews with people in Williams’ personal and professional life. However, the film is set apart as it is done in LEGO animation.

While Piece by Piece is not the typical LEGO movie like fans have come to know, it is a very fun and clever way of tackling a biopic like this. It also makes for a captivating and inspiring story to see Williams’ career grow over the years and his incredible journey. The movie also includes the voices of some of Williams’ most famous collaborators, like Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, and more.

1 We Live In Time (2024)

Available February 7 On Max

Two acclaimed actors team up for what many consider one of the biggest tear-jerker movies of the last year. We Live in Time is a romantic drama starring Florence Pugh as Almut and Andrew Garfield as Tobias, two people who meet by random accident and form an immediate romantic connection. We Live in Time follows their relationship, jumping around on the timeline to see the early days, their struggles with starting a family, and the tragedy that changes things later on.

While the premise of the film might make it sound like another romance story with a lot of bittersweetness to it, the thing that really elevates We Live in Time are the performances from Pugh and Garfield. They both make these two such fully formed characters with humor, heartbreak, and complexity. Their chemistry together is wonderful and it makes the story all the more effective.
