Zoe Saldaña is no stranger to the world of action. She leads the cast of Taylor Sheridan's Lioness, the hit Paramount+ espionage thriller show that just wrapped up its third season. In addition to roles in the MCU and in the recent Star Trek reboot trilogy, Saldaña is also a crucial figure in James Cameron's Avatar franchise. Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) marks the latest installment in the ongoing saga, which is expected to continue with a fourth and fifth installment. In the midst of her roles in these major action franchises, Saldaña starred in a smaller-scale thriller in the 2010s that remains an interesting chapter of her career.
Released in 2011, Colombiana puts Saldaña front and center as an action hero, and the film is now set to make the jump to a new streaming service. Though currently only available to buy or rent on platforms like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video, the film is now confirmed to arrive on Starz on November 1.
Colombiana Makes Its Starz Debut On November 1
Directed by Olivier Megaton, who also helmed the second and third Taken movies, Colombiana's return to streaming could mean the movie is about to reach a much wider audience. The action thriller sees Saldaña starring as Cataleya, an assassin seeking revenge for the murder of her parents, with a supporting cast that includes Callum Blue, Michael Vartan, Jordi Mollà, Amandla Stenberg, Lennie James, Cliff Curtis, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Graham McTavish.
Colombiana arrived two years after the releases of Avatar and Star Trek, the former of which was, until recently, the highest grossing movie of all time. Despite this, Colombiana wasn't a big hit. Made on an estimated budget of $40 million, the action thriller grossed $71 million worldwide, meaning it likely didn't break even in theaters. Critically, too, Colombiana struggled, and it sports only a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Popcornmeter, however, is higher at 67%.
Colombiana Proved Zoe Saldaña Was The Perfect Action Star For Lioness
Colombiana may not have been a major success, but it nevertheless represents a crucial stepping stone in Saldaña's career. It marks the first time Saldaña was positioned as the sole action hero in a film. Even if the movie as a whole fell short for many, Saldaña's performance and her believability as an assassin was a key point of praise in reviews. Saldaña's action-hero presence is now a key driver of Lioness' success, which sees her starring as CIA operative Joe McNamara and participating in a variety of bombastic action set pieces.
It's unlikely that Colombiana will ever be considered a defining title in Saldaña's filmography. The filmmaking and storytelling ultimately don't come together enough for it to reach that upper level. Nevertheless, Saldaña has clearly had action chops from an early point in her career, and Colombiana remains a crucial movie in that regard, and one worth checking out when it lands on Starz next month.
