Zendaya Reveals Her Relationship Red Flags One Year After Tom Holland Engagement
Zendaya has weaved a difficult web when it comes to dealing with fame.
Over a year after she and Spider-Man costar Tom Holland confirmed their engagement, the Euphoria actress acknowledged how she grapples with life in the spotlight.
“At the end of the day, you’re a public figure, there’s nothing you can do,” Zendaya explained in an Interview magazine conversation with The Drama costar Robert Pattinson, “but some things are meant for yourself and for your loved ones.”
The 29-year-old admitted that her public persona can even be at odds with the characters she plays.
“I do try to have privacy, not just for characters, but for me in real life,” she continued. “I try to be honest to who I am when I am in public, but I also try to keep things for myself.”
This isn’t the first time Zendaya has shared her disaffected acceptance with life in the spotlight.
"Parts of my life, I accept, are going to be public," she told Elle in 2023. “I can't not be a person and live my life and love the person I love. But also, I do have control over what I choose to share."
While the Disney alum emphasized she did not want to “hide,” she noted, “It's about protecting the peace and letting things be your own but also not being afraid to exist.”
Indeed, Zendaya and Tom’s confrontation with public perception dates all the way back to 2021 when paparazzi photos led them to confirming their romance.
“One of the downsides of our fame is that privacy isn't really in our control anymore,” Tom told GQ of the viral photos at the time. “And a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world."

As he put it, “We sort of felt robbed of our privacy.”
Indeed, while their relationship is now out in the open—it wasn’t something Tom nor Zendaya had exactly planned.
“I don't think it's about not being ready,” he added. “It's just that we didn't want to.”
But if they have to share, Tom and Zendaya are of course going to make sure the world knows just how much they love each other. In September, Tom sweetly corrected a fan who referred to Zendaya as his girlfriend, asserting, “Fiancée.”
