The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess really wasn't like anything else we had seen in the series up to that point, finally answering fan calls for more realism after a divisive turn towards the toon-ish. It really gave the characters an entirely different edge, and it went down an absolute treat with most in the community when it debuted onto the Nintendo Wii and GameCube.

That original was followed up by a HD remaster that actually didn't carry the game forward in any major way, and though it may have been hampered by the Wii U, it really didn't look that great either. Thankfully, there are plenty of good people out there who work hard to rectify the situation with the latter, and a new version really has it looking far better than it ever did before.

Over on Twitter/X, the user Stormslayer shared a WIP restoration of Twilight Princess HD known as Dusklight HD. It's an immensely ambitious project that intends to remain faithful to the original, while thrusting the visuals forward into the modern day. The original post reads as follows:

This is DUSKLIGHT HD! A WIP accurate restoration of the original vision for Twilight Princess. It enhances Twilight Princess HD, bringing back missing details and restoring the original mood and atmosphere with accurate colors and bloom. Here are some of the forest textures I finished today! The rounded cliff texture has been restored! (No more ugly seam) along with the original colors!

All of this has been made possible by the decompilation of the original code, allowing a native PC port to be produced, and all of these modifications to be added on top. It's a project that's continuing apace, and there's plenty of chance to get involved for yourself, or put in requests for other games in the series that the team should turn their attention to when done.

The best way to do so is undoubtedly via their Discord page, so join up to the community if you'd like to follow along and download the game to play when all is said and done in development.

The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess Link And Midna

The next game in the Zelda series should hopefully be announced relatively soon, as we're still waiting in earnest for a mainline single-player game that has been built natively for a handheld beast like the Switch 2. There are some rumors it could draw inspiration from the realism era of Twilight Princess, so let's hope it returns in that form as well, whenever they do decide to confirm the game.
