A new open-world RPG is set to make its way onto Steam pretty soon, and it’ll be a delight for players who are fans of The Legend of Zelda and Red Dead Redemption, as there are elements of both in the upcoming title. Likely one of the most popular genres in gaming, RPGs tend to draw inspiration from several well-known titles. This is not to say they aren’t innovative, as is shown by the award-winning standout RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Even so, it does borrow aspects from others, such as some Final Fantasy titles and Persona games. The Zelda franchise completes its 40th anniversary this year, and it continues to inspire games, like a new free Zelda-like game on Steam. The same can be said about Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption series, which set new standards for open-world games with both its entries. Now, a new game that subtly blends both franchises is set to arrive soon.

The Legend of Khiimori Looks Stunning

The Game Is Set In 13th-Century Mongolia

The Legend of Khiimori is a new open-world RPG scheduled for release on March 3 on Steam and consoles. This is a game that has a heavy focus on exploration and managing horses that help you gather the necessary resources to survive. Khiimori is presented from a third-person perspective and is set in the open wilds of 13th-century Mongolia, a region that isn’t too often explored in games other than in Civilization 7’s mixed civilizations.

You’ll control a courier rider, who has to explore the world as you enjoy the landscapes and hunt. One of the main features of Khiimori is how central horses are. With the breeding system, you’ll be able to essentially “craft” horses with specialized traits, in addition to being able to tame and bond with them.

With these horses, you’ll be able to set off into the wilds, where you’ll face various challenging climates and terrains, fighting to survive. This will require planning your delivery routes, but also leaving prepared with your bow and arrows, which will help you hunt and fend off any threats. The game’s visuals look remarkable, and with all these factors, it should be on your radar.

There's A Real Zelda Meets Red Dead Vibe Here

The Legend Of Khiimori Seems Like An Homage

A person rides a horse in the wilds as it rains in The Legend of Khiimori.

Even though the game is set in a real-life location and time period, there is clearly a lot of inspiration drawn from Zelda and Red Dead Redemption. The first is how important horses are in Khiimori. Horses in Red Dead Redemption and Zelda also play a huge role in those games, so it almost feels like an homage, if not an extension. Additionally, the large open world with challenging climates and terrains resembles those of the aforementioned titles.

There is also a semblance of magic in Khiimori, which makes it feel even more inclined toward Zelda, though it does not give into the fantasy-like tropes adopted by Nintendo’s franchise. The Legend of Khiimori will be released soon on Steam, and I’m certainly keeping an eye out for this RPG.
