Earlier this week during a surprise Nintendo Direct showcase, Nintendo announced a brand-new addition to its iconic rail shooter series. Titled Star Fox, this retro-inspired title will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 and is, of course, inspired by the 1993 game with the same name. Heavily inspired by Star Fox 64, this brand-new iteration will follow Fox McCloud and the rest of his team as they take on missions around the Lylat planetary system, but unlike the originals, Star Fox will have significant improvements, including the addition of a submersible, new cutscenes, a challenge mode, 4v4 PvP battles, and more. It is set to launch on June 25, 2026, exclusively for the Switch 2.
But what has any of this got to do with a potential The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake? Well, for the past few months, many leakers and insiders have insisted that a reimagining of a retro favorite will soon launch on the Nintendo Switch 2. Excitingly, these leakers also alluded to an upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake so if the Star Fox rumor was true, does this mean an Ocarina of Time remake is on the horizon?
Well, over on r/zelda, many believe this to be the case after one user posted, "The leaker who said that Star Fox would come out this summer got it right. And you know what else he said, no? Yes, the remake of Zelda OoT will be released at the end of this year." Of course, it is always worth taking rumors and "insider information" with a pinch of salt unless otherwise confirmed by developers. However, there is no denying that the recent Star Fox announcement has done nothing to quench the excitement over a potential Ocarina of Time remake, especially as fans have been calling out for it for years.
"After how Star Fox looked, I am pretty interested how Zelda will look," the top comment read. However, another user is hoping that a potential Ocarina of Time remake will be handled carefully, saying, "As long as the game takes OoT’s gameplay and story in a deeper direction, I’m sure this will be an instant masterpiece. If Nintendo plays it safe, and it’s just another remake on better hardware, it’ll be very disappointing."
Another user agreed, using Metroid Zero Mission as an example. "As someone who enjoys remakes like Metroid Zero Mission, that being a highly changed game that remakes the spirit of the original but not the specifics, the new Star Fox remake is a little worrying for me," they shared. "The thing I want the least from an OoT remake is a 1-to-1 remake. This isn't because I dislike OoT. Much the opposite! It holds up well, and is still good. I just feel that if you're going to remake something, commit to fully remaking it. Make the game as if it was being designed for the first time today. Using Star Fox as an example, Star Fox 64 itself was a remake of the SNES game. It took the spirit of a space shooter with branching paths, but redid every specific. I love that so much more than just copying every detail 1-to-1."
At the time of writing, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the existence of a The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, but it seems as though all hints are pointing in that direction, especially following the announcement of Star Fox. Here is hoping that if this remake does come to fruition, it is exactly what fans have been waiting for.
