Zack Snyder, a director known for his distinct cinematography, has revealed the trailer for his latest movie, The Last Photograph, which is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The action thriller tells the story of an ex-DEA operative who enlists the help of a “washed-up junkie war photographer,” the only person to have seen the faces of the killers the agent is hunting.

“Their journey into the unknown takes them further and further away from civilization, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal,” a 2025 synopsis reads.

Snyder is famed for his dramatic cinematic style. Fans will remember 300 (2007) and his foray into superhero movies starting with Watchmen (2009).

The Last Photograph has reportedly been in the works since the mid-2000s and is described as Snyder’s passion project.

“The idea of taking a camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me,” Snyder told Deadline when the project was announced. “The Last Photograph is a meditation of life and death, embodying some of the trials that I have experienced in my own life and the exploration of those ideas through image making.”

Various actors have been attached to the project in the past two decades, including Christian Bale and Sean Penn in 2011. Ultimately, Stuart Martin and Fra Fee will play the two main characters; Fee will play the troubled photographer while Martin will play the ex-DEA agent.

The TIFF screening was a last-minute addition to the film festival and will be the first time anyone has ever seen it. Despite Snyder’s blockbuster credentials, the film has yet to be picked up by a studio or distributor.

Some have speculated that it’s because the film is extremely violent. Even the trailer is age-restricted; those wanting to watch it must click through to YouTube itself (below).

In 2024, another film about a war photographer, Lee, was released. Starring Kate Winslet, the British actress even learned how to operate a Rolleiflex.

The Last Photograph will debut on September 12 in the John Bassett Theater in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
