Yellowstone Quietly Starts A New Era In 2026

The Neo-Western proved such a massive success that the show spawned two prequel shows, 1883 and 1923. Sheridan then parlayed this success into the spy series Special Ops: Lioness, the crime dramas Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, the historical Western Lawman: Bass Reeves, and Landman. The Yellowstone-style family melodrama The Madison and Tulsa King’s upcoming spinoff, Frisco King, proves Sheridan’s TV dominance is nowhere near an end.

However, the original story of the Yellowstone franchise might well be, even though the show’s characters are still central to its two ongoing spinoffs, Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Dutton Ranch focuses on the Montana ranch that Beth and Rip bought after the Dutton family sold Yellowstone, while Marshals centers on Kayce’s work with a group of US Marshals protecting the state. In Marshals, after selling the sprawling ranch to the Reservation in the original show’s series finale, Kayce resides in a smaller personal portion named East Camp.

Kayce Selling East Camp Ends The Dutton Family’s Yellowstone Connection

Since Kayce’s wife died on East Camp, he understandably has complicated feelings about maintaining the satellite ranch as a home for himself and his son. Thus, it is hardly shocking that Kayce almost sells the ranch to Weaver Ranch’s Tom Weaver before deciding against this course of action in the series finale. While Kayce didn’t go through with the sale, it would spell the end of the family’s dynastic links to the ranch.

This sounds tragic, but could secretly be great for the Yellowstone franchise more broadly. Although hardly a conventional police procedural, Marshals is, as the title implies, more akin to a cop show than a Neo-Western, so the role that Kayce’s family ranch plays in the show is comparatively minimal. Yellowstone was so central to the story of the original show that it gave the series its title, whereas East Camp is simply Kayce’s current home.

By selling the rest of the ranch in the original show’s ending, Kayce had already shed his emotional links to the Yellowstone ranch. Similarly, by buying a sprawling Montana ranch of their own, Beth and Rip ensured that they would still be ranchers just like they were in Yellowstone.

Dutton Ranch Can Be Yellowstone’s True Replacement After Marshals Season 1

Even if Kayce were never to actually sell East Camp, Beth and Rip now own and run a massive ranch in Dutton Ranch. Thus, both in terms of the stories of the shows and their titular ranch settings, Dutton Ranch functionally acts as the new Yellowstone, which frees up Marshals to be more of a story about Kayce's career in law enforcement.

After five seasons of seeing John Dutton deliberate over whom to sell his massive ranch to, only to die before the decision was even made, the franchise is overdue for a new story. While the messy, melodramatic antics of Beth and Rip feel like a spiritual continuation of Yellowstone’s original story, Marshals can now become the Tracker/Reacher style action thriller that viewers were promised when Kayce sold the ranch in the first place.

Although the original show needed its eponymous setting to ground its action, the franchise has outgrown its old ranch. As Dutton Ranch becomes the natural Yellowstone continuation, it is clear that Marshals can start a new era by moving on from East Camp.
