An Xbox Wire post that went live shortly after Senua's reveal expounded more on the game. In it, Ninja Theory studio Dom Matthews describes Senua as "an out-and-out action-adventure" that "gives players more agency and a lot more gameplay." He goes on to admit that Ninja Theory and Xbox saw negative feedback about Senua's Saga's lack of meaningful gameplay, so they wanted to address that issue in the next Hellblade game while doubling down on the slick presentation people liked.
While the game is still linear, its world will be a bit more expansive as players explore it. There will be more traversal options, like Uncharted-style climbing, and an expanded arsenal of weapons and focus abilities that Senua can use during combat.
As for why it's not called Hellblade 3, Matthews also said that was to show how different the gameplay in this new title is. "The title of just Senua really reflects that this is something fresh and new and different. It is a different style of game," he told Xbox Wire. "I think Hellblade I and Hellblade II had an intention that we delivered on – but this is a different intention. I think of it as being additive – we’re taking all of that goodness and adding the types of things that people expect from a premium action-adventure game."
While Gears of War: E-Day is going to be an Xbox console exclusive, Senua isn't. It will be released across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027. Like all first-party Xbox games, it'll be part of the Game Pass Ultimate catalog from day one.
