It's fantastic that we have remasters of classic Lord of the Rings games to look forward to, and basically any game that came out nearly three decades ago has an opportunity now to dust its cobwebs off. Many games are trapped on older, more inaccessible platforms, and remasters like these allow fans to revisit them with better graphics and performance. As for other licensed movie tie-in video games, there’s one that may be as popular as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and it may be arriving rather soon.
Per the official Xbox store page, and as shared since on X, Shrek 2 Remastered has been leaked. The full reveal trailer, which may have been intended to appear during ID@Xbox next week, has gone out in full, and it’s hilarious. It begins by purposefully mimicking Grand Theft Auto 6’s aesthetic, soundtrack, and marketing, with text that appears, saying, “The wait is almost over.” But instead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s logo, a different neon sign materializes: the ‘2’ from the Shrek 2 logo, complete with Shrek’s ears.
Part of the charm of Shrek 2 is its four-player co-op, and it should be incredible to experience it again in 2026 and on modern consoles. It’s unknown if we’ll ever get another Shrek game like Shrek 2, but this remaster is a lovely celebration of the franchise and what it’s meant to gamers.
For many fans, this announcement will be greater than anything they could see from Grand Theft Auto 6 here on out. Shrek 2 surely has an enthusiastic fanbase (we probably wouldn’t have gotten a remaster if the community wasn’t so fervent, anyway), and this remaster is proof that Aspyr has its thumb on the right pulse nowadays. It seems as if Aspyr is cherry-picking the biggest cult classics to develop remasters for, and no IP or franchise may be off limits.
With any luck, an opportunity will be here for a Limited Run Games Collector’s edition or a similarly decked out physical release in the near future. If The Lord of the Rings and Shrek remasters have been tapped, there’s no telling what other enormously popular Xbox classics might get a remaster next, giving fans a chance to demonstrate their appreciation for some legendary titles.
