X-Men's New Villain the Creationist Can Redraw Reality, Erasing Injuries
Marvel's upcoming X-Men Annual 2026 #1 - from Ryan Stegman, Steve Skroce, Sanford Greene, Arthur Hesli and Clayton Cowles - will introduce 'the Creationist.' In a new preview, the mutant heroes encounter one of the Creationist's reality-defying monsters, and make an awful discovery...
The issue's summary reveals that the Creationist is channeling the imaginations of four artists to unleash kaiju on Earth-616. What fans didn't know until is that the monsters are 'drawn' into being, and don't play by regular rules. Every time the X-Men hurt one the Creationist's monsters, the wound is replaced by a pencil sketch of healthy skin that suddenly becomes the new reality.
While Deadpool's healing factor is incredible, allowing him to instantly regrow any missing tissue and literally survive as just a head, even he can't erase injuries from existence. Like Wolverine, Deadpool's healing factor seems tied to his caloric intake and does have limits, while the Creationist's beasts are forged of pure, limitless imagination.
In this way, the Creationist bends reality so that their monsters don't just heal - they were never even hurt in the first place. It's difficult to see how X-Men like Wolverine and Rogue can stand against these homo superior kaiju, but the Phoenix's reality-warping powers may be the perfect weapon against them.
X-Men's 2026 Annual Is a Celebration of Comic Art
X-Men fans knew a monster fight was on its way, but the preview reveals how the comic will cleverly use the art itself as part of the creature's powers. As the monster bursts into reality and as it heals, the sketch layer of art is used to indicate it's not quite in-sync with reality.
The issue also boasts three artists, indicating there'll be more metatextual tricks to come that rely on contrasting art styles. It's an incredibly fun way to utilize a villain whose power is all about creative ability, breaking the fourth wall and showing the true nature of the X-Men's reality as a work of art.
X-Men's Phoenix Is Facing a Worthy Foe
For months now, Jean Grey's Phoenix has been off in space, having little to do with the X-Men. Now, the Creationist's power has brought her back to Earth and confronted her with a godlike power.
In X-Men lore, the Phoenix is the cosmic embodiment of creation. While it may be destructive, it only destroys the old so that the new can flourish. That makes an artist villain a particular challenge, as the Phoenix may not want to aid Jean against this new foe. A bad guy who is constantly creating new forms of life sounds like someone the Phoenix would approve of.
The preview ends with Jean Grey seemingly contacting the Creationist, and logically she should just be able to shut them down with her godlike powers. The fact that this happens so early suggests that Jean will be confronted by an immense power - one she can't simply burn away.
The X-Men are fighting an enemy who can heal from any injury by hijacking the art of the comic universe in which they exist, making even Deadpool's incredible healing powers look B-list.
