Founding X-Men Hero Phoenix Is Taking on Thanos
Jean Grey's Cosmic Odyssey Is Heading for the Mad Titan
During the conclusion of Marvel's 2019-2024 Krakoan Era, Jean Grey unlocked the secret of the Phoenix's origin. A being beyond time and space, it was first 'born' only recently, as Jean connected with every mutant past, present and future to combat the godlike artificial intelligence known as Enigma. Jean slaughtered this existential threat, leaving her more connected and attuned to the Phoenix's power than ever. While this incalculable power has corrupted Jean in the past, she's now finally in control of her abilities, setting out to do good on a cosmic scale.
However, a cosmic scale comes with cosmic villains, and Thanos is looking to take out Jean Grey, having received a power-up from her recent antagonists the Dark Gods. The Phoenix Force is the ultimate force of creation in the Marvel Universe, while Thanos has a religious and romantic reverence for death. This is a fight decades in the making, as Jean Grey gets to cut loose against a villain who is in many ways her cosmic opposite.
Having connected to the Phoenix at the moment of its creation, Jean Grey has the ultimate version of her powers in any reality.

X-Men's Jean Grey Already Proved She Can Kill Thanos
Even Thanos Can't Match the Power of X-Men's Ultimate Powerhouse
In Jean Grey's favor is the fact that she already took down Thanos solo. In Christos Gage and Greg Land's recent Original X-Men #1, the founding members of the team were pulled out of their home reality by an ultra-powerful version of Jean from another universe. As an introduction to their new 'leader,' the team learned that on her world, bonding with the Phoenix gave Jean Grey the power to defeat Thanos and Ultron solo. The reveal confirmed that Jean certainly has the potential to take down Thanos by herself, but whether the same will happen in Marvel's mainstream timeline is still to be seen.
Having connected to the Phoenix at the moment of its creation, Jean Grey has the ultimate version of her powers in any reality. If any version of Jean Grey's Phoenix has ever been capable of taking down Thanos, then the mainstream Jean has that same power. X-Men's godlike hero can defeat Thanos using her new powers, but power is only half the battle, and the Mad Titan has always been a master tactician with extensive knowledge of the galaxy's cosmic forces. With her allies and enemies in the mix, and with Thanos boasting a new power-up from the Dark Gods, fans will just have to check out Phoenix #7 to see if the founding X-Men hero is truly ready to take down the ultimate villain.
Phoenix #7 is available from Marvel Comics January 22, 2025.
