Warning! Spoilers ahead for X-Men '97: Season Two!

X-Men '97 is back, and it's already going full throttle with new mutants, new teams, and new outfits for its roster of iconic mutant heroes.

'97 Season Two is focused on three timelines, and in the present day there are three mutant squads to keep track of, including Cable's newly assembled X-Force. To truly inaugurate them as a team, Cable has gifted his roster with updated costumes.

"I admit it," Jubilee says in the preview for the latest issue of Marvel's X-Men '97: Season Two tie-in comic, "the new fit ain't bad." And she's right; it's a slick evolution of Jubilee's classic look, and the same goes for fellow X-Force recruit Sunspot's design upgrade.

The X-Men '97: Season Two canon comic is written by Steve Foxe, with art by Salvador Espin. Season Two of the animated show is packed with plotlines and fast-paced action; the comic offers a few extra beats to get reacclimated to where the series' ensemble cast is after the first season.

Fans who have already watched the first three episodes of X-Men '97's new season have been formally introduced to Cable's X-Force team on screen: Archangel, Psylocke, plus new recruits Jubilee and Sunspot. The Season Two comic series depicted Cable putting together his team in its first issue; the preview for issue #2 shows Sunspot and Jubilee still acclimating to the more militaristic mutant team.

The preview for Season Two #2 starts with Psylocke putting the younger mutants through their paces in a brutal training session. As it ends, Cable arrives and declares, "new uniforms are ready." At first, Jubilee balks. "I styled it myself," she says, referring to her previous outfit. But she's quickly won over by her new X-Force costume, which features a version of her classic trenchcoat over a sleek black and yellow jumpsuit.

Sunspot, meanwhile, gets an orange and blue color scheme with an oversized yellow collar, and black/yellow gauntlets on his arms. It's a formal introduction for the designs viewers will get better looks at as the TV show's second season progresses. As Season Two, the comic was designed to do, it gives readers the chance to stay with these characters a few extra beats longer than the series can afford.

X-Men '97's Mutant Teams Are Distinguishing Themselves With Sleek New Gear

X-Men '97 Season Two #2, Cable leading X-Force into battle

Fans already got a glimpse of X-Force's upgraded fits on the cover of Season Two #2, and the preview for the issue shows the moment they first suit up in their new gear. The full issue will expand on their first official mission as a team, as they work to track down Apocalypse's Horseman War. Viewers of X-Men '97 the TV show have already seen how that mission plays out. Notably, the tension between Psylocke and Jubilee that has been evident on screen is given more time to develop on the page.

X-Men '97 is taking some major swings and making big changes in every regard. That includes stylistic choices and updates for all the franchise's major characters. X-Factor, the X-Men, and X-Force are all cultivating distinct team visual identities that make them immediately recognizable as the '97 incarnations. That's a big selling point for the series, and X-Men '97: Season Two the comic is a key part of that ongoing project.

🐺

Wolverine (Logan)

“I’m the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn’t very nice.” You’re the fierce loner who acts first and philosophises later — but beneath that adamantium-plated exterior beats a heart that cares far more than you’d ever admit. You’ve been burned enough times to distrust the world, so you keep people at arm’s length, yet you’d throw yourself into any fight to protect the ones who slip past your defences. You don’t need a cause or a manifesto — you just need someone worth fighting for. Like Logan, your greatest strength isn’t your claws or your healing factor; it’s the stubborn refusal to let the people you love face danger alone.

Fierce Protective Resilient Untamed

🧠

Professor X (Charles Xavier)

“Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” You’re the visionary who sees the best in everyone — even when the world gives you every reason not to. Your greatest power isn’t telepathy; it’s an unshakeable belief that understanding and compassion can bridge any divide. You lead not through force but through hope, building bridges where others build walls. Some call you naive, but you know that real strength lies in extending a hand to your enemy. Like Charles Xavier, you carry the weight of a dream that most consider impossible, and you refuse to let it die.

Visionary Empathetic Diplomatic Hopeful

🧲

Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr)

“Peace was never an option.” You’re the survivor who learned the hardest lesson life has to offer: the world will not protect you, so you must protect yourself. Your conviction is unbreakable and your patience is terrifying — you’ll wait years to set the right plan in motion. You don’t hate humanity; you simply refuse to let your people be victims ever again. Every action you take, no matter how ruthless, is driven by a profound love for those who share your struggle. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you.

Resolute Strategic Ruthless Unyielding

Steve Foxe, author of the tie-in comic, noted in an interview that he worked closely with Marvel Studios on the project, and was able to include cut material from Season Two of the series in his script.

Though we don't know for sure, Jubilee's costume upgrade feels like that kind of moment. One that didn't quite fit in X-Men '97 the show, but which became a small but standout moment in the comic.

X-Men '97: Season Two #2 will be available July 8, 2026 from Marvel Comics.
