EXCLUSIVE: Filmmaker and writer Eric Appel has signed with WME for representation in all areas.
Appel follows his agent Matt Martin, Senior Partner in Motion Pictures, who was announced as moving over from CAA to WME in December.
Most recently, Appel directed The Breadwinner, TriStar’s family comedy starring Nate Bargatze and Mandy Moore, which releases in theaters on May 29.
In 2022, Appel co-wrote, directed, and produced Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starring Daniel Radcliffe, which premiered to critical acclaim at the Toronto Film Festival, going on to earn him two Critics Choice Awards, a PGA Award and two Emmys, along with WGA, DGA, and BAFTA TV nominations.
Appel was an early adopter of digital-first comedy, directing many of Funny or Die’s viral hits, such as Undercover Karaoke with Jewel and Lindsay Lohan’s eHarmony Profile. Previously, he beat out a competitive field to direct the pilot of the Lord & Miller live-action/animation series Son of Zorn, where he also served as series director and executive producer.
Over the last two decades, Appel has had a major presence in television comedy, with directing and writing credits on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office, Happy Endings, Silicon Valley, and New Girl. He continues to be represented by Artists First and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
