‘Will Trent’ Renewed For Season 5 At ABC

3 days ago 9

ABC has renewed its hit police drama Will Trent for a fifth season.

The news comes as no surprise if you read Deadline’s renewal status reports. As we most recently noted, “Will Trent is ABC’s top linear draw, ranking as the most-watched ABC scripted series in Live+Same Day viewership. The character procedural is also a favorite among network brass. Its renewal is also a lock.”

Based on Karin Slaughter’s New York Times bestselling “Will Trent” book series, Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was abandoned at birth. He endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system, alongside his on-and-off again love interest, Angie (Erika Christensen). Now, Will uses his unique point of view in the pursuit of justice and has the highest clearance rate in the GBI.

In addition to Rodríguez and Christensen, the series stars Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner and Kevin Daniels as Detective Franklin Wilks. An honorable mention goes out to Will’s dog, Betty.

Season 4 of Will Trent is the series’ most-watched season to date, and stands as the first ABC series to grow across each of its first four seasons since Scandal over a decade ago, as well as the first broadcast series to do so in nearly 14 years, according to Nielsen and the network.

The show currently airs new episodes from its fourth season on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m.

For those keeping track, so far ABC has renewed its hit comedy series Abbott Elementary for a sixth season, the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy for a twenty-third season, the Kaitlin Olson-led High Potential for a third season, as well as 9-1-1 for a tenth season and its sister series 9-1-1: Nashville for a second season. The Nathan Fillion-led The Rookie was also renewed this morning. Series that are still awaiting decisions include Tim Allen’s sophomore sitcom Shifting Gears, as well as two newer entries, Scrubs and RJ Decker.

Will Trent executive producers include Liz Heldens, Daniel Thomsen, Slaughter, Oly Obst, Howard Deutch, Ellen Marie Blum, and Rodriguez. Heldens and Thomsen also serve as showrunners. Will Trent is produced by 20th Television.
