Wild new fan theory emerges why Mel Schilling quit Married At First Sight

As this season's explosive Married At First Sight hits the midway point, a new fan theory has emerged to explain Mel Shilling's abrupt exit from the show.

The 54-year-old relationship expert rocked Nine's juggernaut last month when she announced she was quitting the experiment.

And now one viewer has speculated that Mel, who has been with MAFS for 12 years, left because of the bullying between cast members this year.

'Mel quit because of this season's cast, and you cannot change my mind,' they began on the post shared to Reddit.

The MAFS fan singled out controversial intruder bride Juliette Chae and Gia Fleur as they outlined their theory.

'The look on [Mel's] face when she tells off Juliette in the promo for Sunday is so telling. 

They continued: 'This year has been full of disgusting drama and bullying. I don't know if I'll watch the rest of the season. 

'I've found myself getting angry and yelling at the TV ('shut up Gia' mainly), watching these gross scenes play out. 

'Imagine having to be a part of it and dealing with them and the producers in real life.'

Fans weighed in on the theory with many agreeing.

'Yeah, that makes sense. I wouldn't want to be a part of it either,' said one Reddit user, while another added: 'She looks genuinely disgusted this year, like actually horrified. 

'I think this year it's finally clicked for her that this version of the show is way too f***ed.'

A third person said: 'I agree. I think this cast was the final straw. 

'Most of the women are awful. Tyson is being given a platform. None of the men calling out Steve's behaviour. It's all a big no from me,' they continued. 

'I'd be more upset by those doing the casting than the cast,' suggested another viewer. 

Nine has featured an embarrassing confrontation between Juliette and Mel, alongside the other experts, in a teaser for Sunday's Commitment Ceremony.

In the footage, astonished Mel can be seen rejecting Juliette's excuses over her behaviour at Wednesday's dinner party when she relentlessly attacked her husband, Joel.

At one point in the preview, Mel can be reacting in shock after Juliette demands an apology from a heartbroken Joel.

Things grow heated as the outspoken bride talks over Alessandra Rampolla, with the trailer ending as Mel tells Juliette: 'Show some respect.'

 Meanwhile, Mel discussed her motivations for stepping away from the hit show in a heartfelt statement she released last month.

She said the decision came after careful consideration, citing ongoing health challenges and the strain of splitting her life between Australia and the UK.

Mel, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023, announced she was in remission in January 2025, after undergoing treatment.
