We're returning to the island sooner than you might have thought

When the 2026 Emmy nominees were announced last week, Apple TV's Widow's Bay was clearly a favorite. The comedy horror series about a cursed New England island town pulled in 19 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor for Matthew Rhys. Three of the show's supporting players also received nominations, including Stephen Root, who plays Widow's Bay local Wyck Crawford, a true believer in the island's supernatural forces.
Needless to say, a lot of people are eagerly anticipating the show's second season. Fortunately, in a recent interview with Polygon about the upcoming season of King of the Hill, Root gave an update on Widow's Bay season 2.
"We started in late May last year. We're hoping to start a lot sooner than that so we can get it out sooner," Root tells Polygon.
Fortunately, Widow's Bay creator and showrunner Katie Dippold is taking steps to make that happen, as Root explains.
"The writer's room opened about two weeks ago, so they should be able to have fairly complete scripts by December," he says. "Hopefully we can get out there a little quicker."
What to expect from Widow's Bay season 2

Quicker would definitely be better, as the show's final two episodes of season 1set up a mind-blowing twist for season 2. In the second-to-last episode, the origins of the island's curse are revealed to go all the way back to town founder Richard Warren (Hamish Linklater), who made a pact with a demon centuries earlier. For the curse to end, the Warren bloodline needs to be extinguished. But after thinking the final person in the Warren bloodline is 84-year-old local Ruth (K Callan), the elderly woman reveals to Tom that his deceased wife was her daughter, making Tom's teenage son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) the last in the Warren bloodline. In other words, for Widow's Bay to finally break the curse, Tom's son will have to die.
