Warning! Spoilers for Widow's Bay episode 4 ahead!Widow's Bay episode 4, "Beach Reads," introduces yet another demented New England haunt, this time in the form of Patricia's (Kate O'Flynn) Sunset Cocktails event. In the previous episodes of this Apple TV horror-comedy series, we were introduced to the residents of the mysterious island town of Widow's Bay, most of whom believe wholeheartedly that their home is cursed. Up to now, Widow's Bay has followed Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), but episode 4 shifts focus to his town hall colleague, Patricia.
The ending of Widow's Bay episode 3 revealed that something went terribly wrong at Patricia's "Sunrise Cocktails" event, and episode 4 follows this up by jumping back in time a handful of days to outline Patricia's efforts in the lead-up to her big party. As it turns out, this isn't just a city event in Patricia's eyes. She gets the inspiration for this party from a self-help book, Your Turn: Out With the Old & In With the You, which mysteriously turns up in her mobile library.
According to the book's author, Lucy Fours, the only thing Patricia needs to do to be accepted by her peers in Widow's Bay is throw a big party. Your Turn breaks down the whole process, providing Patricia with a checklist of items, recipes, and speeches that will really wow the attendees. This births Patricia's Sunset Cocktails event at the Salty Whale, which, just as Widow's Bay episode 3 foreshadowed, becomes a hauntingly demented disaster. There's something really off about Patricia's new book and the party it inspires her to host, but by the time she realizes it, it's almost too late.
Patricia’s Big Party Becomes An Uncomfortable Obsession In Widow’s Bay Episode 4
Apple TVThe first sign that things aren't quite right in Widow's Bay episode 4 is just how obsessed Patricia becomes with her party planning. Early in the episode, we're introduced to some of Patricia's peers, none of whom seem to be particularly accepting of her. They barely contain their dislike, making it clear that they consider Patricia a liar and an attention seeker. Since Patricia has grown up with these women, she's desperate to earn their approval and even adoration. She comes to believe that Sunset Cocktails is the way to do it, and she gives the event all her attention.
Widow’s Bay Review: Matthew Rhys’ Horror Show Proves Apple TV Is Still The King Of Suspenseful Comedy
Matthew Rhys' Widow's Bay continues Apple TV's legacy of exceptional, suspenseful thrillers but with a delicious, ghost-story-horror twist.
While searching security footage for Tom's Sea Hag from Widow's Bay episode 3, Sheriff Bechir (Kevin Carroll) notices that Patricia has spent a lot of time sitting at a picnic table by the docks reading her book. The observation becomes full-out alarm as Bechir realizes that she didn't just sit there all day—Patricia remained on the pier with her eyes fixed on Your Turn all through the night as well. It's certainly not normal behavior (even for Widow's Bay).
Widow’s Bay’s Boogyman History & What It Has To Do With Patricia
Bechir doesn't act on his observations immediately, since it seems Patricia is already regarded as a rather strange figure in Widow's Bay. This comes down to her past with the island's infamous serial killer, the Boogyman, who preyed on teenage girls in the '90s. Any young woman this villain went after was brutally murdered, but, according to Patricia, she was attacked by the Boogyman and lived to tell the tale.
It's evident in Widow's Bay episode 4 that Patricia is eager to talk about her close call with the Boogyman, and this is precisely why the other women her age in Widow's Bay believe she is lying. Indeed, it's unclear at this point in the series whether Patricia is telling the truth or not. These women certainly come across as "mean girls," but when one explains in an outburst that the Boogyman murdered several of her friends, it becomes somewhat understandable why Patricia's dramatic survival story would rub people the wrong way.
As people's opinions of Patricia come to light, it's slowly clear that this party won't be enough to win the town over in the way Patricia hopes. Years of trying to convince everyone she's telling the truth about the Boogyman have left Patricia thoroughly alienated. Rosemary (Dale Dickey) is concerned for her colleague, but does what she can to support her all the same—even as things get really weird.
What Was Really Going On At Patricia’s Sunset Cocktails Party Explained
There is a lot of weirdness of note as Patricia's Sunset Cocktails event kicks off. Characters keep making strange comments about Patricia's headpiece, even though it appears to be nothing more than a subtle tiara. Rosemary continues to express concern for Patricia, especially as she stands back and watches her cut up strawberries for the punch. Still, the strangest of all of this is that Patricia's party actually seems to take a turn for the better once that punch is served.
All of a sudden, the mean girls from Patricia's high school appear to adore her. Everyone is dancing and encouraging her, and when the music dies down for Patricia's speech and toast, the crowd gathers around to offer smiles and support. It's all pretty heartwarming if you ignore those brief moments when the smiles of the crowd suddenly seem to be replaced by open-jawed terror before flashing back to normal.
Apple TV's New Horror Series Lands Rare Perfect RT Score As It Draws Stephen King Comparisons
Apple TV's new horror-comedy series with a Stephen King-like feel makes its Rotten Tomatoes debut, and reviews are firmly on one side of the field.
Rosemary's concern and the crowd's behavior are ultimately explained when Sheriff Bechir shows up in the kitchen and, in absolute horror, asks Patricia what she is doing. His concern and disgust seem to snap Patricia out of it. A sort of veil is lifted, and she sees that the fruits she was preparing for her punch were actually crow corpses and other such disturbing ingredients. Her tiara is a towering, demonic headpiece, matched by the deer-like table centerpieces. Then there is the Your Turn book, which has transformed into a leather-bound tome full of disturbing images.
Patricia's book in Widow's Bay, episode 4, is yet another mysterious haunt on the titular island. The thing transformed itself into the sort of thing that would appeal to Patricia, promising that a great party would give her the acceptance she always wanted. In truth, the book was manipulating Patricia into setting up a large-scale ritual sacrifice.
Patricia is naturally horrified when she realizes the truth. As her guests attempt to walk open-mouthed into the lagoon, Patricia does her best to destroy the book, but it becomes fixed to her hand. The only way she can save everyone is to shove the book, hand and all, into the flames. The evil thing catches fire, and the party guests snap out of it before anyone else is hurt. Unfortunately, their circumstances leave them with no room to feel any gratitude toward Patricia. Instead, everyone becomes enraged that she seemed to have drugged them with her punch.
What Reverend Bryce’s Death Means For Widow’s Bay Episode 5
Patricia heads home at the end of Widow's Bay episode 4, completely devastated by the outcome of her demonic party. The events of this episode have caught up with those of the previous, so Patricia ends up running into Tom and Wyck (Stephen Root) just after their run-in with the Sea Hag. Tom, perhaps recognizing that Patricia's night has been just as disturbing as his own, invites his colleague to come with him. This appears to warm Patricia's heart a bit, but any joy at being included doesn't last long as the group arrives at Reverend Bryce's church.
Tom and Wyck hoped that Bryce would have some help to offer regarding the awakening horrors of Widow's Bay. However, when they arrive at the church, they find that the Reverend has taken his own life. It's a shocking twist for the final moments of Widow's Bay episode 4, especially since Reverend Bryce was one of the few people on the island who seemed to know anything about what Tom should expect to happen next.
Whatever Bryce knew about the sorts of horrors the island of Widow's Bay would face or what the residents would have to do about it couldn't be good if he believed that suicide was the only escape. It's a sign that whatever is ahead of these characters heading into Widow's Bay episode 5 won't be any improvement over Sea Hags or demonic ritual-sacrifice parties.
