After last year proved to be a bit of a quiet one in the world of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy at last year’s Academy Awards (save for Godzilla Minus One‘s historic win), 2024 is shaping up to be quiet a different one: Dune: Part Two, Wicked, and The Substance are heavy hitter nominees in some of this year’s biggest categories, including Best Picture.
This morning the Academy announced the 2024 Oscar nominees, after proceedings were delayed recently due to the devastating wildfires impacting Los Angeles. Wicked is leading genre’s interests at the awards this year, with 10 nominations, including in Best Picture, Best Actress and Actress in a Supporting Role for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performances as Elphaba and Glinda, Original Score, and more. Dune: Part Two secured five nominations, including a Best Picture nod, as did The Substance, with Coralie Fargeat tapped in the Best Director category.
We also thrilled for Demi Moore, recognized alongside Erivo for her Best Actress-worthy (and then some) performance in The Substance, and The Wild Robot, which was io9’s top movie of 2024, and rightfully notched a spot in the Best Animated Feature category as well as Original Score.
Here’s the complete list of nominees. The ceremony takes place Sunday, March 2, with Conan O’Brien hosting.
