Glen Powell Addresses Rumor That He's Replacing Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible'
Tom Cruise is now a real-life military hero.
The Mission: Impossible star was honored by the U.S. Navy on Dec. 17 for his advocacy of the military branch and was awarded the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award, the highest honor an individual outside of the Navy can earn.
“His efforts in the film industry,” read a Dec. 17 statement from the U.S. Navy, “have increased public awareness and appreciation for the Navy’s highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.”
The Navy also commended Cruise—who was named the U.S. Navy’s 36th Honorary Naval Aviator in 2020 alongside Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer, according to the organization’s website—for the impact his film projects have had, stating that “recruitment for Navy pilots surged in the late 1980s and early 1990s” because of his work.
“It was an honor to present Tom Cruise with a Defense Public Service award for his decades of naval advocacy through many movies,” Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said in the statement. “His work has inspired generations to serve in our Navy and Marine Corps.”
For his part, Cruise—who shares daughter Isabella Cruise, 31, and son Connor Cruise, 29, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, as well as daughter Suri Cruise, 18, with ex-wife Katie Holmes—expressed his gratitude for the honor.
“I’m happy I have been able to be a source of inspiration to many of the sailors who serve today or have served in the past,” he said in the statement. “The effort was not just on my end, but the cast and crew I get to work with on all our sets. They are what really bring the work to life.”
At the U.K. event where he was honored with a medal and certificate, Cruise also emphasized how in awe he is of those that serve the United States in the armed forces.

“I admire all of the servicemen and women,” he said at the event, per the Associated Press. “I know in life, something that is very true to me, is that to lead is to serve. And I know that to my core. And I see that in the servicemen and women.”
