WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6!After a regular schedule of episodes hitting Paramount+ with Showtime for streaming on Fridays and linear debuts on Showtime on Sundays, there’s no new episode of Dexter: Original Sin season 1 being released on Friday, January 17 – but the season still isn’t over. Taking the franchise in a different direction after the divisive reception of the limited revival series New Blood, Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin has proven popular with audiences and critics as a prequel that follows young Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) in his early days as a serial killer.
Following the release of Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6 on January 10, the anticipation is growing to see Dexter track down the killer responsible for taking Captain Aaron Spencer’s son, Nicky. However, while a new episode each Friday has been the norm since the series debuted on December 13, 2024, Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 7 isn’t available to stream on January 17. Though the episode’s release is later than expected, the wait won’t be too long before “The Big Bad Body Problem” debuts on Paramount+ with Showtime.
Dexter: Original Sin Is On Its Mid-Season Hiatus On January 17
The One-Week Hiatus Was Pre-Scheduled
The reason there’s no new episode of Dexter: Original Sin season 1 this week is because the prequel series is on its scheduled mid-season hiatus. While the episode count of Original Sin has technically already passed the halfway point, its release schedule is halfway done. Dexter: Original Sin season 1’s first batch included six episodes released week-by-week, though episodes 2 and 3 debuted simultaneously on December 20, so only five weeks out of its 10-week slot on Showtime have passed.
Dexter: Original Sin season 1 has 10 total episodes, mirroring the episode count of Showtime's limited revival series Dexter: New Blood.
Following Dexter’s mid-season hiatus on January 17, 2025, the season’s remaining episodes will resume and maintain the prequel’s weekly release schedule. It’s important to reiterate that, although Original Sin’s mid-season break arrived after episode 6, there won’t be another six episodes to come in season 1. Rather, only four episodes remain after Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6’s ending, so the mysteries and big questions introduced this season should be resolved quite quickly.
Dexter: Original Sin features a slate of new actors playing familiar characters from the original Dexter series and the return of Michael C. Hall.
In place of Dexter: Original Sin’s typical 10 pm ET Sunday night release slot on January 19, Showtime will be airing a re-run of The Agency season 1, episode 9, directly after its debut at 9 pm ET. There will also be a re-run of Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6, “The Joy of Killing” airing on January 19 at 8 pm ET for viewers to catch up on if they missed the most recent outing or need another refresher before “The Big Bad Body Problem” arrives next week.
Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episode 7 Will Release On January 24
"The Big Bad Body Problem" Will Premiere On Showtime's Linear Channel On January 26
Thankfully, Dexter: Original Sin season 1’s hiatus only lasts one week. After no new episodes this Friday, Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 7, "The Big Bad Body Problem," will finally make its streaming debut on January 24, 2025 on Paramount+ with Showtime at 12 am ET before making its linear premiere on Showtime on Sunday, January 26 at 10 pm ET.
Before the scheduled hiatus, Showtime released a mid-season teaser to give a glimpse at what audiences can expect from Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 7 and beyond. In the teaser trailer, Dexter is seen investigating the crime scene where Tony Ferrer’s arm was found, Harry chastizes Dexter for arriving at the police-heavy crime scene with Levi Reed’s body in the back of his truck, the Miami Metro team discusses leads on who killed Jimmy Powell and took Nicky Spencer, and Deb finds herself in trouble with her new boyfriend, Gio.
When Dexter: Original Sin Season 1's Finale Will Be Released
Season 1, Episode 10, "Code Blues" Arrives On February 14, 2025
The next four episodes of Dexter: Original Sin will be released on a weekly basis, with the season 1 finale premiering on February 14, 2025. Titled “Code Blues,” Original Sin season 1, episode 10 is expected to see Dexter finally take down Nicky Spencer’s captor while also potentially showing the death of Harry Morgan, whose demise was already teased to occur within the year back in the prequel’s premiere. Even after Harry dies, Christian Slater will likely still return in Dexter’s visions in Dexter: Original Sin season 2, mirroring James Remar’s Harry being imagined in the main series.

Though Showtime has yet to officially renew Dexter: Original Sin season 2, the prequel still has plenty of avenues to explore in Dexter’s early days of killing, especially as he tries to implement the Code on his own after Harry Morgan’s death. However, while waiting for word on Dexter: Original Sin’s future, the next sequel series in the franchise, Dexter: Resurrection, will arrive on Showtime in summer 2025.
Dexter: Original Sin explores the origins of Dexter Morgan as he transitions from student to serial killer in 1991 Miami. Guided by his father, Dexter channels his dark urges through a moral code while starting a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Based on the character created by author Jeff Lindsay, Showtime's Dexter follows Miami Metro Police Department's most skilled blood spatter analyst, Dexter Morgan, as he attempts to satisfy his Dark Passenger's need to kill by hunting down criminals who have escaped justice. However, using the rules his adoptive father taught him to remain undiscovered, Dexter must walk the fine line of seemingly blending into society while continuously feeding his dark urges. Dexter faces several serial killers as his facade slowly crumbles around him; with every problem solved by his Dark Passenger, another one arises for his suburban fatherly life. When Dexter takes things personally or feels that the law is failing, he takes matters into his own hands and even compromises the investigations of his co-workers. Dexter aired on Showtime for eight seasons before receiving a mini-sequel series called Dexter: New Blood, which picked up ten years after the show's events. You can buy each season for just $9.99 for Prime Day.
