Warning: Major SPOILERS for The Night Agent season 3 ahead! The Night Agent has predictably made a serious splash with its third season’s release on Netflix. This action-packed spy thriller is running just as high on adrenaline as ever, particularly when an unexpected death rocks the Night Action team early in the season. An explosive climax to season 3’s second episode ends the life of Peter Sutherland’s biggest ally.

While there are plenty of character deaths in this season of The Night Agent, the killing of Amanda Warren’s Catherine Weaver is a gut-wrenching event that none of us saw coming. Catherine was Peter’s handler throughout season 2, and the pair of them are just beginning to develop a close personal bond when her life is cut tragically short.

A key member of The Night Agent season 3’s cast, Amanda Warren would have been surprised to find out that she’d only feature in two episodes before her character was killed off. However, there are key reasons as to why the series producers and writers took the difficult decision to remove Catherine from the picture.

How Catherine Dies In The Night Agent Season 3

Catherine Weaver dies in the final scene of The Night Agent season 3’s second episode, "Package Deal", when she leads an operation to capture antagonist Jacob Monroe. Catherine opens the door of a car where she thinks Monroe, Peter, and Jay Batra are sitting. In fact, the car is a decoy vehicle sent by Monore that’s rigged with explosives.

As soon as the door opens, the bomb detonates, killing Catherine instantly. Once he’s got away from Monroe, Peter finds Catherine’s body, while the FBI’s Night Action supervisor Aiden Mosley desperately tries to reach her over a walkie talkie. This major twist will radically alter Peter Sutherland’s ending in The Night Agent, when it eventually arrives.

Catherine's Death Pushes Peter To Become More Self-Sufficient In The Night Agent

This time last year, Catherine arguably made Peter’s job harder in The Night Agent season 2. Yet, her death now feels like a catastrophic loss for his work on the Night Action team. Nevertheless, it was a conscious decision for the showrunners of the series to remove her from Peter’s side, forcing him to step up and work more independently.

The show’s executive producer, Shawn Ryan, has told TV Insider in recent days that everyone was on board with ending Catherine’s character arc in this way, including actor Amanda Warren. Taking Warren’s role out of the picture in such devastating fashion certainly raises the stakes for Peter’s mission throughout the rest of The Night Agent season 3.

Does Night Action Still Exist By The End Of The Night Agent Season 3?

What comes next for Netflix’s most popular action thriller series is another matter. At the end of The Night Agent’s third season, Peter Sutherland asks for an extended period of leave, implying that the show won’t be back anytime soon. Meanwhile, Night Action supervisor Aidan Mosley says he’s “scrubbing” Peter’s team of its staff.

It appears that whenever The Night Agent returns to our screens, there’ll be a very different crew of intelligence agents fronting the show. Night Action action as we know it might not even exist.

However, Mosley does suggest to Peter that he has a new partner in mind for his best agent. So we can at least rest assured that Gabriel Basso will be back as The Night Agent’s title character, one way or another.
