Stephen Colbert's Final ‘Late Show’ Guests Revealed
Stephen Colbert is ready for his next chapter.
As The Late Show With Stephen Colbert host quickly approaches his final episode on May 21, the comedian admitted there's one silver lining in CBS' cancellation of the late night talk show. In fact, he thinks the network's decision might have even "saved his life."
"It takes a lot of bone marrow to do the show every day," Colbert told People in an interview published May 19, "and now I’ll be stepping down with enough time, enough energy to do other things that I want to do."
But that doesn't mean the 62-year-old—who took over hosting The Late Show in 2015 after David Letterman bowed out—has put a lot of thought into how he'll fill his days after signing off for the very last time.
"There's so much to think about to do the show," he reiterated. "So, I don’t have much better of an answer than most college seniors do, which is I’ve got to finish this first, because it takes almost the entirety of my brain to do this show. So, we’ll land this plane and we’ll check out the view from there."
However, he added, "But I’m available. Yes."
And while The Colbert Report alum was devasted when CBS announced last July it was axing the show after 33 years, citing financial losses, he's thankful he has several distractions to take his mind off his final week of shows. Coincidentally, his son John, 24, is graduating college while his brother Tommy Colbert is getting married.
"I’m glad a lot of the week is not about me," Colbert—also dad to Madeleine, 30, and Peter, 28, with wife of 32 years, Evelyn McGee Colbert—admitted. "It’s about the people I love more."

As for what fans can expect from his last show ever, Colbert teased his May 21 goodbye will be "something simple."
Most importantly, he wants viewers to smile when they think back on his legacy within the late night landscape.
"I hope they laughed," Colbert noted. "I hope they felt better at the end of the day. I mean, that's it. We're there. We're the last thing you see. A lot of things happen in a day, but we bat last, and so we get the last take that people hear before they go to bed, and I hope it made their day better."
Don't miss the last episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday, May 21, at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
