When Reacher first premiered on Prime Video in 2022, its wide success made sense. Unlike the Tom Cruise movie adaptations that preceded it, the show respected its source material and adapted only one book per season. Another major factor that contributed to the show's early success was Alan Ritchson's casting, who not only embodied the character's imposing physicality but also captured his stoicism.
Like many crime thrillers, Reacher could have been just another one-season wonder that captured lightning in a bottle in season 1. Surprisingly, though, the Prime Video detective series has consistently won both critically and commercially. After four seasons, it still boasts a near-perfect 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its ongoing season 4 is also dominating streaming charts on Prime Video (via FlixPatrol).
Reacher, too, has experienced a fair share of ups and downs during its run. For instance, its second season is not considered one of its strongest installments in hindsight. However, it continues to cement itself as one of Prime Video's most successful IPs, and there is good reason behind its streaming longevity.
Reacher Knows What Its Audience Wants, And Duly Delivers
Prime Video's Reacher keeps its formula quite simple and straightforward. Like the original Jack Reacher books, it shows how its titular character is a self-proclaimed hobo who does not outstay his welcome. In every new installment, he walks into a new town, gets embroiled in a local conspiracy, serves justice to wrongdoers, and usually finds a new romantic interest.

Since every season adapts an entire book from the original series, the show has no room for fluff. Each installment unfolds at breakneck pace with each episode unfolding new mysteries.
Even when it comes to the portrayal of the titular character, the Prime Video show does not try to make him look too realistic. Like his literary counterpart, Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher, too, is almost invincible and possesses near-superhuman strength.
The show also features incredible action choreography where Jack Reacher overpowers most of his opponents with ease. An action hero who beats nearly every villain he encounters should not work on paper. However, since that is exactly viewers expect from him, the predictability becomes a part of the overall appeal.
Reacher Season 4 Is Based On One Of Lee Child's Strongest Books
Serving as the 13th entry to the original book series, Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow delivers everything one expects from the Reacher franchise. It features some memorable action sequences where Reacher even takes a few serious hits before winning. At the same time, it also explores a more cerebral side of the character, reminding readers how Sherlock was a key inspiration behind his characterization.
Gone Tomorrow also cleverly gets Jack Reacher embroiled in a global conspiracy without taking away the small town, Old-West feel that many love about the franchise.
By accurately adapting most story beats from the original novel, Reacher season 4 is perfectly leveraging its source material's biggest strengths. As the villain twist from Reacher season 4's recent episode reveals, the show has taken a few creative liberties. However, these arguably make it better for the screen and more relevant for present times.
Reacher Season 4's Success Is A Positive Sign For Neagley's Spinoff (& Season 5)
The Neagley spin-off show is scheduled to premiere on the same Reacher season 4 ends its run. If Reacher season 4 had struggled to leave its mark, the Neagley spin-off would also have likely suffered. With season 4's success, however, the Neagley spin-off has far better odds of benefiting from its parent show's ongoing momentum.
Given how the Neagley spin-off is adopting its own standalone story and is not based on any existing books, it still seems like a risky addition to the franchise. However, Alan Ritchson's confirmed return as Jack Reacher in the spin-off is bound to get the upcoming show more eyes, especially after season 4's success.
Even for Reacher season 5, season 4's critical ratings and commercial performance could prove crucial. Like its predecessors, season 5, too, has picked up one of the better Lee Child books for adaptation: Make Me. This alone spells a promising future for the series. Adding to that, Reacher season 4's success keeps viewers well-invested in the franchise and ensures they will be back for more once it returns.
