Despite Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to premiere just a month later, the upcoming series Spider-Noir has decided to replace Peter Parker as Spider-Man. Fans of the franchise will know that there are countless versions of Spider-Man scattered around the Spider-Verse. While Peter Parker is certainly the most famous Spider-Man, he's far from the only one out there, and he won't be the protagonist of Spider-Noir.

Though there's plenty of room for other spider people, the decision to change to a new character for Spider-Noir still came as a bit of a surprise. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is coming out in just a few months time, and the movie will feature Peter. Nicolas Cage also already played Spider-Man Noir, and his character was named Peter Parker. Luckily, there's a reason for Spider-Noir's decision to replace Peter Parker.

Spider-Noir Is Replacing Peter Parker With Ben Reilly

The first trailer for Spider-Noir revealed that Nicolas Cage is playing a character named Ben Reilly, not Peter Parker. The trailer revealed an image of Reilly's detective office, which proudly displays the name "B. Reilly." Lamorne Morris' character later refers to him as "Ben," and it's clear that Cage is playing a very different version of Spider-Man.

It's not uncommon for different spider people to have different names. Famously, Miles Morales has also taken on the mantle of Spider-Man, while there are countless other variants, from Gwen Stacy to Miguel O'Hara and Penny Parker. Curiously, Ben Reilly is usually the alter ego of the Scarlet Spider, however, while Spider-Noir has historically been a version of Peter Parker from the early 20th century.

Why Nicolas Cage Is Not Playing Peter Parker In Spider-Noir

Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir

Since Nicolas Cage is playing Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir and not Peter Parker, the obvious question is why was the character's name changed. As previously mentioned, Spider-Man Noir has historically been named Peter Parker, while Ben Reilly is the secret identity of the Scarlet Spider. Though it has been the answer for several other changes, Spider-Noir's change in character isn't actually due to a rights dispute between Sony and Disney.

Instead, the creators of Spider-Noir explained the switch from Peter to Ben. Showrunner Oren Uziel and producer Chris Lord said that Peter Parker's character is associated with boyishness and innocence, and Ben Reilly was chosen for Spider-Noir to convey that he's older and more jaded. The creators also hinted that there's another, secretive reason for the switch that will be explained within the show.

“Peter Parker feels very synonymous with a high school kid. Boyish. On his way up.” - Oren Uziel

"This character's very different from the Peter Parker from the movies. He's older and jaded, and not afraid to punch a guy in the face drunkenly. He already had his Chinatown disillusionment moment that happened years and years ago."

"I have to be coy about the reasons, because you'll find out. The reason he's named Ben Reilly is explained." - Chris Lord

In their interview, the showrunner and producers of Spider-Noir also confirmed that Nicolas Cage's character, Ben Reilly, will actually be called the Spider instead of Spider-Man Noir. Based on his hero moniker and the secrecy used to discuss Reilly's name, it seems safe to assume there's some twist in store for Spider-Noir viewers. Only the series itself will be able to explain the reason for replacing Peter Parker.

There are other aspects of Spider-Noir that could provide clues to that twist. Ben Reilly, as the Scarlet Spider, was a clone of Peter Parker, and Spider-Noir may have the same sort of twist in mind for Cage's character. The tagline in the trailer, "With no power, comes no responsibility," could indicate that Ben is simply posing as the real Spider-Noir while acting as a private eye.

Is Nicolas Cage Playing The Same Character From Into The Spider-Verse?

One of the most exciting aspects of Spider-Noir since it was first announced was the fact that Nicolas Cage would be starring in it. Cage delighted fans when he voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it seemed for a while that he would be playing the same version of the character in Spider-Noir. Given this name change, however, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Black Cat Will Officially Debut In Spider-Man's Next Appearance

The first look at Black Cat in Spider-Man's next appearance has been released, and this new take on the Marvel anti-hero promises to be intriguing.

The Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse was named Peter Parker, while the Spider in Spider-Noir is obviously named Ben Reilly. Spider-Noir would have to either retcon Into the Spider-Verse or provide some sort of explanation for why the Spider has changed his name if Cage is playing the same character. It seems more likely that Cage is playing an alternate version of Spider-Noir from a different universe.

Spider-Man Fans Will Have Plenty Of Peter Parker In 2026

Even though Peter Parker won't be featured in Spider-Noir, fans of the original Spider-Man shouldn't be worried. There's more than enough Peter Parker content coming in 2026. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will bring Tom Holland's version of Peter back to the silver screen on July 31, while Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 is set to premiere on Disney+ in Fall 2026.

There's also a chance that there will be even more Peter Parker content than just the confirmed movie and animated series. Avengers: Doomsday is set to premiere on December 18, and Tom Holland's Peter Parker could easily appear in it, though his involvement hasn't been confirmed yet. Since Doomsday will dive headfirst into the multiverse, it's even possible that the film could feature multiple different versions of Peter, just as Spider-Man: No Way Home did.

Spider-Noir is set to premiere on Prime Video on May 27.

Given the teases of a twist in Spider-Noir, it's also possible that Peter Parker could be involved in the show as a side character. Regardless, Spider-Man fans should be more than happy with everything that's set to come out this year, even though Nicolas Cage isn't playing Peter Parker in Spider-Noir.
