Zac Efron Shares Secrets From Filming 'High School Musical's Iconic Basketball Scene
The cast of High School Musical may not have been all in it together.
Drew Seeley—who sang the vocals for Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton in the 2006 Disney Channel original movie—recently opened up about his experience bonding with Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu and the rest of the cast when he stood in as Troy for the film’s 2007 concert tour.
“I hit it off with them,” Drew said on the Dec. 8 episode of the Magical Rewind podcast hosted by Boy Meets World’s Will Friedle and The Cheetah Girls’ Sabrina Bryan. “They were so lovely.”
But while they were (and, according to Drew, still are) friends, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t what Vanessa—who dated Zac from 2005 to 2010—was looking for. “I do think Vanessa resented it a little bit when I was on tour,” he admitted, “because she was like, ‘I wanna sing to my boyfriend every night, not this guy.’”
Drew also shed some light on the whirlwind experience of recording the vocals for Troy—whose parts were sung by Zac in the subsequent films—noting that it was an opportunity he “lucked into” because he cowrote “Get’cha Head in the Game” with songwriters Ray Cham and Greg Cham.

“One weekend [Ray] just happened to have a little sidegig and he was like, ‘Hey, you want to help me write this song for this Disney movie?’” the 42-year-old explained. “So, he brought me in to write ‘Get’cha Head in the Game.’ Neither one of us thought it was going to turn into anything.”
And before earning that spot on the soundtrack, he’d already sung the demo.
“I just lucked into meeting the right people at the right time,” Drew shared, “and I was ready when they needed somebody to fill in those missing vocals. They knew I could do it and I was there and ready.”
