Why Armie Hammer Says Being Canceled Was “Liberating” After Sexual Assault Allegations

Armie Hammer would rather have you say something extreme about him than nothing at all.

Indeed, the Call Me By Your Name actor recently shared why he is no longer fazed by the yearslong rumors that he is a cannibal.

“I’m not gonna lie,” Hammer told guest Tom Arnold in the debut episode of his podcast Armie Hammer Time. “I’m just like, ‘Hey, I’m a cannibal.’ What makes more noise? ‘Armie Hammer is a cannibal’ or ‘Armie Hammer might not be a cannibal.’”

The Social Network alum explained that he appreciated the rumors—which started circulating back in 2021—because it forced him to take accountability for his actions.

“The cannibal thing makes more noise,” he added. “You don’t get an apology tour in this world. Someone says something about you, everyone believes it—and then they move on with their lives to whatever it is that they’re focused on. ‘Cause they’ve got their own lives.”

But Hammer’s latest comments on the allegations come just four months after he first broke his silence on the rumors, calling them “outlandish.”

“Now, I'm able to sort of look at it with a sense of distance and perspective and be like, ‘That's hilarious,’” the 38-year-old said on the Painful Lessons podcast in July. “People called me a cannibal and everyone believed them. They're like, ‘Yep, that guy ate people.’”

The actor—who shares kids Harper, 9, and Ford, 7, with ex wife Elizabeth Chambers—admitted he didn’t know how to respond to the claims at first.

“You're just like, 'What?’” Hammer continued. “What are you talking about? Do you know what you have to do to be a cannibal? You have to eat people. How am I going to be a cannibal?' It was bizarre.”

Among the rumors that he was an anthropophagus, Hammer also faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. After a two-year investigation from the LAPD, no charges were filed against him. Still, Hammer explained why the ordeal ultimately felt beneficial for him.

“It’s incredibly liberating,” he said on the Club Random podcast in July. “Because so much of my life leading up to there was being preoccupied with how I was perceived, which now you don't have to care about.”
