Why ACOTAR Fans Think Elain & Azriel Will Be the Leads in Next Book

It looks like Sarah J Maas may have chosen whose court will reign next.

Fans are convinced the A Court of Thorns and Roses author hinted that the love story of Feyre's second-eldest sister Elain Archeron and Night Court spymaster Azriel will take center stage in the forthcoming book from the fantasy romance series while sharing a special message about being named Spotify Wrapped's Top Author of 2024.

In the clip shared to her Instagram Dec. 13, Sarah—wearing a black blazer and white blouse, as well as one red and one blue ring on her right hand—sat in a white room with a vase of flowers visibly in the background. After thanking her fans for helping her achieve the milestone, she took a sip from a cup of tea, only to have some of the liquid dribble down her shirt.

"I literally just spilled the tea," she quipped before giving a special shoutout to the audiobook narrator for the series, Elizabeth Evans. "She's actually in the process of re-recording all of the ACOTAR audiobooks we released for the 10th anniversary of ACOTAR this spring."

"I'm not gonna tell you guys anything," Sarah continued. "But no surprise, going to be a long book."

The 38-year-old added, "It's too early for me to tell you who it will be about. And what's going to happen, but I hope to have more details for you soon."

Following Sarah's message, readers were convinced the flowers and cup of tea were a nod to Elain, who took up a passion for gardening in the books and whose teacup foreshadowed her fate of being made into high fae.

As one user commented under the post, "Are the flowers and tea a hint for next acotar book."

Others added that the rings Sarah wore could be symbols of Elain—who notably wears a lot of pinks throughout the franchise—falling in love with Azriel, whose aura is often described as being cobalt blue. And to back up that theory, some pointed out the author's emphasis on the upcoming novel being "long"—a supposed callback to Azriel having the longest wingspan among the Illyrian brothers.

"Hear me out," one user wrote, "spilled the tea, spring, two rings on the same fingers (rose and blue), flowers and doors behind her, 'a looong book' ('...Azriel’s wings are the biggest.' if you know what I mean), soon..."

Another added, "The tea spilling was intentional, wasn't it Zooming in on the rings. Yes, I see."

And while Sarah didn't confirm or deny fans' speculation, she previously shared that she feels like there's still more to unpack when it comes to the relationship dynamics in the series, which currently contains five books.

“There’s a lot to explore within the concept of mates and your agency about it,” she told Today in a January interview. “I’m not going to say if I am exploring it in future books or not. But it definitely offers a wealth of things to explore with this concept of free will and what is true love. Is it something that’s destined? Or is it something that you make? Is it both?”
