Even before Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom has made a proper MCU debut on-screen, Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers are laying some exciting groundwork for one of the most popular and dynamic villains in comic book history. While many were hoping for the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday this week, the Russos have still provided some new potential insights about Doctor Doom...through coffee.

Following SXSW London, The Russos' production company AGBO and RDJ’s Happy Coffee brand partnered to transform a coffee shop into a unique Latverian/Doctor Doom experience. Interestingly, the coffee shop's brand-new menu features several ties to Doctor Doom's origins seen on the page, suggesting that his MCU history might not be that far off from the original comics.

Featuring the official Latverian flag, traditional holidays, past rulers, and Victor's family history, the Russos' new coffee pop-up is full of intriguing references, particularly regarding "Cynthia's Blend." Here's our full breakdown of every reference and clue to Doctor Doom's origins, and how they'll might relate to the events of Avengers: Doomsday.

The Avengers: Doomsday Coffee Shop Teases Several Clues About Doctor Doom's Origins

Doctor Doom looks over Latveria in Marvel Comics

Right off the bat, one of the reveals previously teased online by the Russo Bros. was a comic-accurate Latverian flag featuring Doctor Doom's traditional symbol, supporting the idea that the nation Doctor Doom rules in the comics will be featured at some level in Avengers: Doomsday. Likewise, the flag was notably different from the one briefly seen in Fantastic Four: First Steps, potentially suggesting that RDJ's Doom might not be from the same reality as the FF (Earth-828).

Likewise, several items on the coffee shop's menu reference Latveria's history as well as Doom's from the original comics. For example, one drink is named "Fortunov" after Latveria's previous ruler, who was eventually overthrown by Victor von Doom on the page.

There's also “The Rapprochement,” a Latverian holiday connected to the anniversary of Victor’s mother’s death. Traditionally, the holiday encourages reconciliation among Latverians by seeking forgiveness from those they've wronged. In the comics, this has led to temporary truces between Victor von Doom and Reed Richards, suggesting that they may be allied in Avengers: Doomsday in the face of an overwhelming multiversal crisis.

At the same time, the menu board at the coffee pop-up also features the phrase: "Richards Was Wrong." Despite the tease of a potential alliance, we also have a tease promising Doom and Mister Fantastic's classic rivalry as arch-foes.

There are also drinks referring to "Zefiro" and "Hassenstadt Dark." Zefiro was the Romani tribe Victor’s family belonged to, while Hassenstadt was Latveria’s capital before it was renamed to Doomstadt when Victor came to power. When put all together, all of these coffee shop references definitely seem to suggest a pretty comic-accurate Doctor Doom in the MCU, especially in light of what is arguably the most important reference out of them all.

The Biggest New Reveal Is A Reference To Cynthia von Doom (Doctor Doom's Mother)

Cynthia Von Doom in a red hood in Marvel Comics

Among all the Easter eggs at the new coffee shop, the major stand-out drink was “Cynthia’s Blend.”

Without a doubt, Cynthia von Doom is the single most important person in Victor’s life when it comes to his dark origins. In the comics, Cynthia was a powerful Romani sorceress who made a dark bargain with Mephisto to help her people. However, the deal ultimately led to her death and the demon lord holding her soul hostage.

Determined to free his mother's soul from Mephisto’s grasp, Victor devoted himself to mastering both science and magic, learning all he could so that he might one day give her peace. Case in point, it was one of his scientific experiments in pursuit of this goal that resulted in his face being permanently disfigured after his device meant to commune with the dead exploded. This device also started Victor's rivalry with Reed Richards, his college roommate who had tried to point out the device's flaws, leading to Victor blaming Reed for the entire accident and his injuries.

At any rate, Cynthia von Doom is the foundational reason why Doctor Doom is such a major threat in the Marvel Universe as one of its most powerful supervillains, as he's simultaneously one of the greatest scientific minds on Earth and one of its most formidable sorcerers.

Victor von Doom is incredibly arrogant, ruthless, and power-hungry, possessing one of the Marvel Universe's biggest egos. However, his underlying love for his mother and original desire to save her is what has also made him one of the most compelling comic book villains ever created.

Keeping that in mind, the inclusion of Cynthia von Doom as a reference in this pop-up coffee shop could have some fascinating implications when it comes to Avengers: Doomsday. Given how crucial she is to Victor's origins and history on the page, it would follow that she'll be just as important to Robert Downey Jr.'s version in the MCU as well.

The Russos have proven their love for sympathetic Marvel villains with underlying motivations audiences can relate to despite their dark methods and flaws. No Marvel villain better fits that bill than Doctor Doom, especially if Cynthia is part of his MCU backstory when he debuts in Avengers: Doomsday.

Following this pop-up coffee shop in London, the biggest question is how much of this history will actually make it into Avengers: Doomsday itself. After all, Doctor Doom hasn't been an ongoing threat in the Multiverse Saga thus far, at least not on-screen, save for an all-too-brief appearance in Fantastic Four: First Steps' post-credits.

While the coffee shop references so many different pieces of Doom's comics history, that's not necessarily a guarantee that they'll be part of the MCU canon as well (as cool as that would be). Likewise, Avengers: Doomsday is still a massive ensemble film at the end of the day, so the movie probably won't spend much time on Doom's origins in excessive detail.

That said, even just a handful of moments exploring Victor’s childhood, his mother’s death, and/or his rise to power in the wake of losing his mother could provide all the context audiences need for Doom's MCU debut.

There's also the big question mark surrounding the casting of Robert Downey Jr. Regardless of how comics-accurate Doctor Doom's origins are in the MCU, he's also going to share the face of Tony Stark's Iron Man from Earth-616. That's something that will no doubt have to be addressed at some point in the upcoming Avengers movie. At any rate, this latest (and certainly unique) piece of promo for Doomsday does have me pretty excited about Doctor Doom's MCU origins all the same.
