Whitney Houston, who died on this day in 2012, will always be remembered for her classic hits such as “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” her iconic cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” and her powerful voice. However, one key accolade that she achieved in her lifetime includes breaking a record that The Beatles and the Bee Gees previously held. She achieved seven consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number one hits between 1985 and 1988, starting with “Saving All My Love For You” and concluding with “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” This also made her the first female artist to achieve such a record.
How Whitney Houston Breaking The Iconic Bands’ Records Changed Music
Image via Arista Records Houston has always been a powerhouse, and was known and recognised for her pop and ballads. In 1985, she released “Saving All My Love For You” from her debut self-titled album, which became her first number one. Two more hits from the same album also topped the charts, which were “How Will I Know” and “Greatest Love of All”. However, her 1987 sophomore follow-up became key to her chart success.
Houston achieved four more consecutive number ones thanks to her 1987 album, Whitney. This includes “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional,” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”, a heartfelt ballad that she did not want to record. She tied with The Bee Gees and The Beatles when “So Emotional” hit number one, and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” dethroned them, with neither band, due to different projects and disbandment, able to defend their record.

Houston breaking the records of these iconic bands marked a huge change in music; while rock and roll music in the Fab Four era ruled the music world, pop soon emerged as a leading genre, evidently with Houston breaking records that these influential bands held. Though the Bee Gees also released pop music while being a band with many genres and talents, Houston’s record-breaking number ones proved that she was the leading figure in pop. As a Black woman in an industry and genre where men dominated, notably Wham! and Michael Jackson, Houston breaking these records was groundbreaking.

How Whitney Houston Set Another Iconic Record
While breaking any record the Beatles set is iconic enough, Houston’s chart success and seven consecutive number ones go beyond beating the Fab Four and the Bee Gees at what they do best: releasing chart-topping songs. Her 1987 self-titled album became the first by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, breaking barriers in the pop scene not only as a woman but as a Black woman.
Many look up to Madonna to be the Queen of Pop, which is still undisputable, and others look at Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Olivia Newton-John, and more as female leading figures in the genre. However, it was Houston who pushed boundaries by setting this record and deserves credit for allowing other female pop singers to make a breakthrough and become more successful mainstream artists.
It has been nearly 40 years since Whitney was released, and it is still as important as ever. The 1987 album had the second most Billboard number ones from the album, trailing behind Jackson’s Bad (1987) and Katy Perry’s breakthrough album Teenage Dream (2010). The fact that Houston still holds these records long after the album’s release and her death shows how significant her artistry is; Houston’s music is timeless, iconic, and sets a high standard for how pop music should be produced.

Whitney Houston’s Record Still Stands
Image via Roadside AttractionsAs of 2026, 14 years after Houston’s death, she remains the record holder of the most consecutive number one singles. However, this is not the only reason or the main reason why she remains one of the most influential artists of all time. Her commanding vocals, her ability to be a leading artist in pop, gospel, and R&B, and her breakthrough into mainstream pop as a Black woman are why she is considered a legend in the music space.
Houston was always meant to be an impactful star and a pop culture icon. Her debut album was the first debut album and the first album by a solo female artist to produce three number one singles, meaning that her four decades in music were no coincidence. The music world continues to mourn Houston over a decade since her passing, as the gaping hole in the industry where she should be remains noticeable.
