While You Wait for ‘Crystal Lake’, This Fan Film Celebrates ‘Friday the 13th’ in Style

A24 used yesterday to give a tiny peek at its Friday the 13th prequel, Crystal Lake. For fans of the slasher franchise that want something more from Jason Voorhees, an upcoming fan film arriving later this year may be just what they’re looking for.

That film would be Ghosts in the Fog, which hails from indie horror team Womp Stomp Films, the studio behind the Never Hike Alone web series. Ghost is another installment of that and is set years before Never Hike Alone. Three hikers get waylaid by fog and accidentally wind up on the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake, where they meet Jason’s “ghost.” You can see how well that goes for them in the trailer below.

Ghosts has the distinction of being both Womp Stomp’s first-ever animated film and according to the film’s co-director Vincenti DeSanti, the very first animated fan movie for the larger Friday franchise. As the team told BloodyDisgusting, it stylistically takes after the two Sin City films, with 2D animation on top of 3D environments developed by Mako Animation and Armáss Productions. With the new medium, the team promised a set of “uniquely animated kills” that it says will “push the limits of gore” for the franchise.

While Ghosts in the Fog will be a bonus feature on the Never Hike Alone Blu-Ray, Womp Stomp plans to release it for free so everyone can watch it in November, the last Friday the 13th of 2026. If you can’t wait that long, you can put some money down toward that Blu-Ray through this Kickstarter until mid-April. However you end up watching it, the studio made clear the film just exists to show love for the franchise as its legal troubles persist.
