Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for Netflix's Time Cut.Netflix's time-traveling teen horror movie Time Cut has Lucy (Madison Bailey) traveling back to 2003 to try to stop a serial killer from murdering her sister Summer (Antonia Gentry) and her friends. The movie's production traveled to a few different locations for filming and tried to recreate the year 2003 as accurately as possible. Incidentally, Time Cut may have been released in October 2024, but it was shot in the summer of 2021.
Time Cut has been met with mixed reviews, with the story struggling to live up to the confusing time-bending plot. Time Cut's serial time-traveling murderer is aptly named the "Sweetly Slasher," taking down teens one by one circa 2003. Most time-traveling movies focus on more distinct decades, but the Time Cut crew took to filming in Canada to explore the early 2000s. That said, the Netflix original movie can be nostalgic for a certain generation, and it does so through its costume design and locations.
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
The Mall Was A Central Location For The Killings
Most of Time Cut was shot in the Canadian province of Manitoba, including its capital city Winnipeg. Many movies and TV shows have been shot in Winnipeg before, thanks to its small-town feel and broad landscapes. One of the most important locations featured in the film is the Portage Place shopping center, which doubles as the mall where the Sweetly Slasher killings first take place. The mall is famous for its enormous clock, giving viewers major Back to the Future vibes, another sci-fi time-traveling movie.
It was also dressed back to give the audience a 2000s feel, with inflatable furniture and crimped hair everywhere. One teen is even slayed with the sharp edge of a broken CD. Manitoba-based actress Sydney Sabiston plays a teen who has her head smashed into the mall's escalator. Time Cut director Hannah Macpherson praised the chemistry between the two lead actors playing sisters, set against the beautiful backdrop of Winnipeg.

Collège Stonewall Collegiate Doubles For Sweetly High School
Since filming for Time Cut took place in 2021, the majority of production was following COVID-19 lockdown protocol. This meant the cast was constantly tested for the virus and masks were used in abundance on set. One of the bigger sets that was difficult to shoot was Sweetly High School, with hundreds of extras to account for. What the crew did not have to worry about was finding the right location for the turn of the millennium's high school.

While walking through a compelling time travel drama, Netflix's Time Cut instills nostalgia in viewers with its intriguing pop culture references.
The Collège Stonewall Collegiate perfectly doubled as Sweetly High School in Stonewall, especially since filming took place during summer break. Production has unlimited access to any area on campus, without worrying about disputing classes or extracurriculars. This was not the first film to use the college either. Winner, Silent Night, and The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story, were all filmed there as well.

The Selkirk Lift Bridge Helps Lift The Plot
Several scenes in Time Cut were also shot on the Selkirk Lift Bridge in Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada. Being located outside helped give the crew a break from all of the COVID-19-heavy concerns they had for most of the making of the movie. The bridge is located on the northeast side of Winnipeg and sits atop the Red River, an idyllic beauty that stands out in the slasher film.
With its rusty blue appearance and strong steel formation, the vertical lift bridge is almost a metaphor for Lucy, who travels back and forward through time multiple times in Time Cut. Ultimately, Lucy chooses to stay behind in 2003, especially since she no longer exists in 2024 after catching the Sweetly Slasher in Time Cut's twist ending. This means she'll have a new timeline exploring the fictional sets and towns of Manitoba, Canada in which Time Cut was shot.
